A friend is interested in two jobs in Winnipeg. Can someone tell me the difference in student body, location, and governance issues between U Winnipeg and U Manitoba? This is for a job in a Faculty of Arts dept.

No, but that is where the moderators put Canada questions. Maybe they should create a specific forum for North and South American questions that do not include the U.S.A.

As far as I know, they are two completely different institutions, in different parts of the city; UWinnipeg is downtown and UManitoba is about 20 minutes away. That's about all I know, though. I was at UManitoba for a conference once, but have never been to UWinnipeg.

Is Winnipeg overseas?
Only if you come in from the north.

U Manitoba is a large institution, similar to a US R1. Probably 20,000 students and almost every imaginable discipline represented. It is located in the suburbs.
U Winnipeg is much smaller, lower reputation, not known much outside the province, and is more similar to a US liberal arts college but it doesn have some grad programs.

Only if you come in from the north. Why that? It's also overseas if you come from Europe.

But the OP's moniker is montrealer. And who says I come from Europe?

Of course I know where you come from, with good connections on the fora one knows everything, also the color of your shoes I know.
I did not mean you or the OP personally. This may be language from my side, sorry then, it meant to say if one comes from... In the sense, any place is overseas for someone.
This was not supposed to be a too serious post. Just providing some reasons why it's OK for the mods to put any place they like in the Overseas Thread and it will be correct in some sense.
Yes, yes, I'm, away with stupid remarks now and you can come back to the original sense of the thread....

The CHE moderators in their wisdom have decreed that everywhere but the U.S.A. is overseas. If you look for any discussions on Canadian jobs or experiences, the discussions are in the overseas forum.

U. Manitoba is the larger of the two and has more graduate programs and faculties than U. Winnipeg. U. Manitoba is on the outskirts of town. U. Winnipeg is downtown. Both student bodies are culturally diverse. Both universities have some excellent folk in their departments. Also, it is nice to see in the Canadian context how U. Winnipeg is expanding in new and exciting ways, developing innovative interdisciplinary graduate programs. Both universities have some money coming in and are using their money to build and develop programs. I've been racking my brains for how these two universities compare to American counterparts or even Canadian counterparts. It's a tough call. Oh yeh. One final point. Winnipeg is significantly colder than most Canadian cities and Winnipegers take great pride in this. It's a good place with good people-- real salt of the earth.
