If so, please share.
I have been told I need to develop a hobby. Besides reading. And working.
Or, does one need a hobby?
I think you asked this question last year. :) Jewelry making... but may not go with younger children in the house. Cycling ... mountain bike, trail or road. Get a tag-along-bike for Espresso. I second candlemaking. Photography...great for documenting children growing up. Can be interactive or meditative. Adjuncting (ok, this won't work for FT or TT folks but it is for me, since I'm in industry).

If a hobby is a fun activity that isn't "real work," then this forum is my hobby. Cool or sad? Discuss.

I learn quite a bit from reading and posting here, so I do not think that it is sad to have this fora as a hobby. It would be sad however, iff one were to come here instead of meeting people in RL or taking care of the daily problems that we face in RL.

What I've done in the past/do sporadically now: - Sailing. Or, at least, I'm developing this as a hobby. Does it count if I only do it 1-3 times a year? More than that gets pretty expensive, especially since I'm learning and taking lessons. And, obviously, this only works if you have some body of water close by.
- I did yoga, and would like to get back into that. Now that you mention it, maybe I'll wander over to see when new classes start...
- I used to swim, but I did it too long competitively and it just stresses me out to do it recreationally- I can't get past that I'll never be anywhere near as fast again (petty, I know).
- Running. I did a few 10K and 10 mile races recreationally and quite enjoyed it, but I don't have the time to keep up a 2-3 day per week regime that is kind of the minimum to be able to do events like that.
- Skiing and snowshoeing, but I live too far away from the mountains these days.
What I actually do in daily life these days: - Bike (to and from work, but 40 mins each way so I guess this qualifies as my most hobby like thing).
- Read the newspaper in the morning. (might not seem like much, but I really love that 20 mins to myself)
- The fora.
- Watch a few specific TV shows.
- Read.
I should work on moving some stuff from the top list to the bottom list.

I've got to get back to the yoga and pilates, too. I did both for a very long time and enjoyed them immensely. Also, I refinish furniture...finding a great item at a tag sale that just needs a little work to bring it back to life is rewarding. And it means I can redo my house when the dogs eat something they shouldn't (like the couch). I don't enjoy upholstering so much, but given the dogs' tendency toward inappropriate snacks during their early years, I got quite good at that, too.

I tend to pick up hobbies for a while and drop most of them, but a few I keep around and enjoy. Currently, I garden, crotchet and tango (okay, I'm learning to tango. Badly.). I'm also obsessed with getting a perfect score on wii bowling.

Birthday cake decorating and other baking - but I hate to cook otherwise.
Me, too. I have been baking since I was 13. I am the only baker in my family. I enjoy the process and the product. I do wish this house had a better oven, though. I have a theory that there are bakers and there are cooks, but they are seldom the same people. My mother, for example, is a cook, but she seldom baked when I was growing up and probably hasn't baked at all in the past 20 years. I have no interest in cooking actual food. I also like to read and walk the dog (not at the same time).

I've kept a journal since I was 12. This is a great thing tho' much of the stuff written down is, well, just rambling nonsense. It's very portable. Every so often you get the chance to pick out a new notebook that expresses something symbolically (a nicely bound diary) or adds a bit of cheer (a $1 notebook covered w/daisies).
Sewing or knitting in various forms is also fun and can be done while watching a bit of frothy TV or hanging out and chatting with people.
Collecting Persian carpets, first editions or fine art as hobbies could get pretty expensive but one must dare to dream ;)

I've been accused of not having any hobbies. I guess enjoying music and going for walks don't count. Does doing yoga count? Or going to art galleries?
Definition: "An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure." On that definition, my activities should count. Why are knitting, stamp collecting, or refurbishing old car engines more central examples of hobbies?
Hobbies seem important to have for people who are planning for retirement or are looking for ways to meet other people. But when I retire from my place of employment, I'll probably keep on doing most of the things I already do, except for teaching.

We enjoy crafting. Also, just reading crafting magazines and shopping for supplies and daydreaming about projects we will likely never complete. I consider craft fantasizing my primary hobby. When I am good, I run and lift a bit as a hobby. I love to bake and am becoming rather good at it. I cook, although with less enthusiasm. I no longer enjoy travel as much as I used to. I don't particularly enjoy reading as I used to either, although after watching the History Channel's "History of Sex" last night, I fantasize about reading Herodotus in an armchair, while sipping tea. I do enjoy collecting and drinking tea of all types. I have a few teapots and would love to indulge that collection more.

Watching TV should count as a hobby.
(watching Sissi l'imperatrice at the moment - it's amazing how well they spoke French at the Austrian court... ;-)

I also like to read and walk the dog (not at the same time). I'm one of those strange people who like to cook and bake. Sometimes, I do them both at the same time (bake dessert while I cook dinner). I garden exclusively so I can cook. I read cookbooks so I can cook/bake better. I exercise, so I don't feel guilty when I eat too much of what I bake. Okay, so maybe I only have one hobby and many support hobbies.

Weightlifting, row-crop agriculture, and philately.
That's ridiculous. Tractors don't know from stamps.
