I enjoy wine and food. You could call it a hobby since I do invest a lot of money in both. I have a lot of dinner parties and even when it's just me and Mr. ABD, we still do a lot of fancy cooking for fun. We are also fortunate to live in a city with many interesting restaurants.

Like others here, I also run, around 20 miles a week, not much, but enough to call it a hobby.

Music. I love music. I listen to a lot of different music, look for new music, and I also play piano. This occupies less time than I would like with my current schedule, but I do consider it a hobby.

Television - a terrible, awful hobby to have, I know, but I'm someone who also considers drinking good wine a "hobby".

Falconry, knife-throwing, martial arts, biathlon, great hobbies to tell your new students when they ask you what you do...

Not my post count---I ate the owner!

I have many that I do *badly*!
I knit---scarves mainly because they require no real skills
I sew---simple patterns  "             "             "
I read---anything, everything, anytime
I'm learning the piano---that probably will result in a repetoire of badly (if enthusiastically) rendered pieces that eight-year-olds without much talent can also play...
I bead---if I'm ever placed in a sheltered workshop environment: I'll be ready to be productive! In the meantime, I have many semi-attractive necklaces.
I'm re-learning the Spanish I took in high school with hope of gaining some fluency.
I quilt---not much lately but that is one thing I do fairly well.
Basically, I'll do anything involving textiles.
I like to look for weird websites---like the fanatics who dedicate enormous time to documenting the history of "wet naps" or the guy who dresses like Peter Pan and other "story book" characters. The web is a paradise for locating eccentrics.

I can't do any of the outdoor pursuits I like (skiing and sailing) because I am hundreds of miles from any sizeable body of water and at least 800-1000 from any ski area (or more than trace amounts of snow for X-country skiing).  I miss those the most. Hell, I just miss the ocean.

While I can understand why there are no participants in cheese rolling among us, I would have thought we could find some cheese tossers in our group.

There's no shortage of tossers.

Requiring tolerance from the tolerant every day.

I don't indulge in my hobbies much these days, I need to be writing/"performing" in spare time, but once in a moon I return to my favorites:

-Building museum-quality scale models.

-Sewing/painting historical flags

-Researching the above

-Drawing/painting/designing betond the above

-"Home improvement"

-Computer games

What I want to learn:

-A musical instrument

-How to grow critters for food and fun

-Auto restoration

-Stained glass production

-Danish (the language, not the baked good)

-Website design

Hmmm...

I'm not sure you'd call these hobbies, but ...

I sing, play piano, cook (typically using too many dishes), hike (we live very close to some great trails), botanize and garden.

Can we talk about semantics and etymology now?

Quote
hobby

1298, "small horse, pony," later "mock horse used in the morris dance," and c.1550 "child's toy riding horse," which led to a transferred sense of "favorite pastime or avocation," first recorded 1676. The connecting notion being "activity that doesn't go anywhere." Probably originally a proper name for a horse (cf. dobbin), a dim. of Robert or Robin.
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=hobby

Does the OED say the same?

Does "hobby" still mean an activity that doesn't lead to anything useful?  I think it still has that connotation, which is why some people are reluctant to say they have any hobbies, and many people say that they are not sure if their enjoyable activities, such as cooking, are hobbies, while activities like stamp collecting or constructing model trains are definitely hobbies.

Exactly. I do things, sometimes because they need to be done (cooking, fixing up the house) and sometimes because they are things I've done for a long time (music, reading). Sometimes they have a link with my work (traveling) or are a last resort because of aging aches and pains (yoga). I wouldn't call any of them hobbies, however.

Hobbies I used to do--sailing, hiking, genealogy.

Hobbies I sometimes do--brew my own beer.

Hobbies I will always do--appreciate the form of the fairer sex.

It does to me.

Drinking actually fits together with some of my other hobbies:

- meeting new people (I like it so much that I think it qualifies as a hobby, weird as that sounds)
- rock/metal/country/hip-hop shows (all at once would blow my mind)
- making out, snuggling, etc.

It might hinder others:

- traveling
- going to the gym
- reading academic books

Does drinking count?

If so, please share.

I have been told I need to develop a hobby.  Besides reading.  And working.

Or, does one need a hobby?

Thinking is my main hobby. After that, playing music. Then reading. Few of us are paid to do anything really interesting, so I vote that hobbies are a good idea if you want your life to be more engaging than a TV sitcom.
