Our evaluation portfolios are due Monday, and if my evals are good and the admin doesn't cut as many jobs as they threatened, I may be able to squeak in over folks with more seniority but poorer evaluations.

Full-time tenure and tenure-track positions at my school are pretty secure. Full time non-tenure-track positions appear fairly secure. Adjunct positions are not secure. Some adjuncts won't be coming back. We will be losing some fine talent.

We've lost some adjuncts, but there's no current information about what the fall holds. I've got a summer class scheduled to co-teach with a TT faculty member. I wouldn't be surprised if my role is cut. Either way, the future is unsure for all of us. An additional issue is the future of current grad students. There'll be less opportunities for them to get their feet wet as a teacher, putting the current crop of new faculty even further behind.

We've turned in our portfolios and are waiting to hear how they affect our position on the waiting list.
Still no word on how many lines will be rescued.
The Uni is saying that they may have to cut 100 currently occupied positions, but from what I understand, this number doesn't include lecturers, since they can say they didn't fire us but simply didn't renew our expired contracts. (In our department, lecturer contracts are only for 1 year at a time; I am told other departments have longer contracts, so the 1-year contract is not a Uni policy.)

The budget-crunch response here, where I'm VAP, is to do away with all VAPs and instructor positions next year, including many adjuncts, and to require TT and tenured faculty to teach bigger classes and potentially more gen ed.

Ack! I'm sorry to hear of your layoff! No doubt the school will be losing fine talent (and notable deadwood will remain fat and happy). Untenured

Our campus is abuzz with wild rumors. It doesn't help that the provost announced that everything is on the table and then refused to provide any clarification as to what constitutes "everything."
My unit is completely insulated, but I am very worried about my friends in other units. It's really awful to feel like you should be advising people to think about going on this wretched market because of all the uncertainty here.
If they decide to shut down [that program], I hope I can convince some of the folks in my unit to help me scream and yell and occupy administrators' offices.

We've had travel and guest-speaker budgets slashed. I just got handed a 20% pay cut.

We only got the number of those who will be terminated late last week, but no names. One hundred administrators and staffers. By the end of today, an anonymous email circulated the names. Each one a shock--deans, athletic support staff, accountants, etc.

Thankfully we have a Dean who is clear and open with information. The Dean has said there will be no full-time layoffs and that we can make due with other cuts. Unfortunately that might mean adjuncts. Also, if the situation gets worse who knows what will be on the table.

My department (R1 Humanities) is planning to:
-Cut administrative staff -Cut some VAP's/lecturers -Let go a number of ABD grad students (relevant to this thread because the department has a very large grad program and normally uses ABD students to teach survey classes in the same manner that adjuncts are used elsewhere)
As of now there are no layoffs/furloughs/wage cuts planned for TT faculty. The chair has been very blunt in explaining that protecting them is the first priority and that major sacrifices will be made elsewhere to accomplish this. Given the cuts to other staff, they will almost certainly have to deal with larger class sizes. The prospect of entire extra classes being added to teaching loads is less certain. There has been some speculation that the department might revert to the standard scheme and actually hire adjuncts to replace the missing grad students, as paying (sic) an adjunct would be cheaper than a senior grad student's stipend, tuition waiver, insurance and other benefits... but at this point that is just theorycrafting...

My wife and her coworkers have been told to expect a corporate-wide conference call on Monday. Nothing good can come out of this.

Ack! Sorry to hear that. We have a faculty meeting Monday, and nothing good is expected out of this one either. We already cut staff and adjuncts. FT's are on the line.
