The worse ever was my second winter/spring in Aberystwyth . . . it rained every single day from New Year's Day until April 1st.

That name (Aberystwyth) brings up nothing but an image of everlasting cold wet rain in my mind. Maybe they should change the name of the place?

But then you get to spend time in the Sail and Castle (I think that's the name of the pub) and listen to the live music.

Even in the worst winter weather, Paris is usually 10 degrees (F) warmer than where I live.

I usually go there in the winter because it's cheaper and fewer tourists are around (and fewer people trying to work in the BN, so I don't have to fight mano-a-mano (sorry, that should be main-a-main) over the manuscripts.

This year's travel plans had to be different, and I'm WISHING I were there now....we just had 6 inches of snow.

So, <<tant pis>> Verafrance, please enjoy the <<temps gris>> pour moi!

(Friendly nod of the head along the Rue Richelieu...)

If we count the last 3 days, it will be two weeks of straight bad weather in Paris for the days to come. This isn't supposed to be Ireland. Sigh.

Hello? You are in Paris and I'm in the deep South of the USA and we are having the same crappy weather! Ugh!

Here a few hours Northeast of Paris, it has been gray, dark, and cold since Nov 1.  Yuck.

At least you're not here on the other end of the Eurostar line . . . grey, dark and dank.

Am I the only person who ever saw the sun shine in Aberystwyth?

That's catchy. Are you sure there isn't a 30's vaudeville song like that--

"When the Sun Shines in Aberystwyth"

Maybe Harry Lauder would have sung it....

   (Or maybe not....)

I can't even start to imagine how a normal human being could be able to pronounce "Aberystwyth" correctly. So, to sing "Aberystwyth"... oh my.

With what would it rhyme, anyway ?

OK, This is what you get for asking a housebound musician looking out over the second 8 inches of snow to fall in a 36-hour period...who has a proposal, a paper, and several other more pressing tasks to avoid...

When the Sun Shines in Aberystwyth
(parody by dellaroux, guilty as charged….)

   VERSE:
Its castle’s in ruins, and just like my heart
Time hastens its sad, sweet decay.
I walk where we once walked,
Where once flew the darts
Of its knights’ ancient bows ‘cross the bay.

I ask how your love fled as swiftly away
I wonder, remem’bring that kiss
How Eros, that charmer, whose swift arrows parted
The stone walls I’d built
Against sorrows like this
Could leave with the dawn of our bliss—oh— :

   CHORUS
When the Sun Shines in Aberystwyth
I take heart, knowing I’m not the third, forth, or Frith,
I was the first one to love you
For none else above you
Could see with the fog making all things a mist, yes—

I’ll always love you, despite your fall
From the giddy height of the castle wall
You ran forth to meet me,
Just didn’t quite see me
At the end of the path on the top of the cliff—

So farewell, forever, to Aberystwyth,
And good-bye to a name and a place in time,
I’ll get off Scot-free
If I leave town by three
Since only the rocks know
You heard my call from below,
And plunged into my arms—but missed.

Your wails were short, like our time, I fear,
I’ll mourn you for-e-ver more, my dear
But the fog that did blind you
Means they never may find you
Until sun’s zenith
In grey Aberystwith

(I can notate the tune if anyone wishes; the note names give a sketch of it:

   VERSE:
GAb G F EbD C Bb Ab C g
GFEb D CDB C—
GAb G F EbD C Bb Ab C g
GGACEgDEbC—

G Ab Bb C GGG Ab Bb C G
G F Eb D C D Bb G—
GAb G F EbD C Bb Ab C G
GA B C g—
GGGA B C D—
GA B C C D Eb D—

   CHORUS:
G G – G G –  FE DE E –
DEF, FF F- FF GD DE E—
GABCCG

All apologies to any offended sensibilities as due...just ask...
(Aussi, je peux fournir une traduction si l'on le veut....improbable, comme je le connais...) (Also, I can provide a translation if anyone, improbably, as I can guess, would want one...)

But thanks for asking!

Glad you liked it...

SW, I vote for the Guinness and turf fire - preferably with a good trad session in the background.

I prefer to drink my wine in Paris (or Rome) sitting outside in the sunshine.

Yes, yes, they want you not only to star in it, but to write the feme tune, sing the feme tune...  :)

A quick google is not giving me any clarity here: could you please shed light on what is meant by "the feme tune"?

(And no, for whatever it's worth, I'm not Denis Walter, whose name is consistently invoked in references to this phrase-that-is-never-defined!)

The tune is, by the way, original...I don't think anyone else living would want to claim it, anyway...

I think Frenchdoctor is a lot more forthcoming on the fora than Kouchner would be, so no, he is someone else. ;-)
