Hi. I'm off to a campus interview for a Dean position soon and have learned that the search will go public from this point on. I'm pretty sure this means that people with learn about my identity via the college's website. I haven't told my Dean here about my search. Would it be wise to do so now? It might be relevant to note that it is extremely unlikely that anyone would learn about my interview (I'm in a different country for one), but I have learned that the world is very small. Any advice would be very helpful to me. Thanks.

In general I would say that it is better to control the news rather than run the risk of letting the news control you, and if your name is published on an institution's website then you can rest assured someone at your institution will find it.  In addition, if you are not currently a dean yourself, then no one will fault you for considering such opportunities as they arise; indeed, some places will be proud.  You know your institution best, though.

The fact that you are in another country might necessitate a modification of this advice.  You might be able to hold out a little longer.

Good luck.

Once it is public then you should inform your dean and/or chair.
