I'm about to interview for a chair position by phone.  Although I'm currently a chair and can imagine what might be asked, I'm hoping that some of you can give me some examples of questions that might be asked of me.  Thanks!

I was just about to post with the exact same question.  Today I was trying to think of some that would be tricky:

"Obviously you've made it to this point in the search because of perceived strengths.  What might be a weakness in your ability to serve as Chairperson?"

"What role do you think faculty governance should play in the operation of an academic department?"

I too am hoping that some of you may be able to share some common phone-interview questions posed to Chair candidates.

Thanks

How do you deal with conflict?

What do you believe to be the responsibility of the chair, and what decisions belong to the faculty of the department?

What is your vision for the department?

What is your management style?

What do you expect from faculty with regard to teaching, scholarship, and research?

What will you need to do your job well?

Do you hail from Planet Hello Kitty?

It's like an action movie, but boring.

I don't know what questions others have been asked on a phone interview, but I can tell you some of the questions I would ask if I were on a selection committee.

Given limited resources (funding, space) how do you set priorities and make choices?

If the majority of the faculty favors a certain action and you personally disagree, how will you represent the views of the department to the Dean?

Do you think the position of Chair is a full time job? Do you expect to sustain a research program? To teach?

How would your staff describe your management style?

How would your colleagues describe your consultation and leadership style?

What experience do you have managing a budget?
