Oh, and I forgot to mention that I always buy Christmas cards in January and save them for the next year. Usually close to 100% off! It's nice to open the gift box and see cards waiting to be signed & mailed.

Just now had to flip the wall calendars over to November, and doing so reminded me of an inexpensive gift I've given people in the past:  "homemade" wall calendars featuring my own photographs.  If you have a supply of great pix--landscapes, family pictures, etc.--why not let your friends show them off?!*  There are online and bricks-and-mortar places that will print and assemble the calendars; all you have to do is provide the images, of course.  Depending on the size and the number you order, it costs about $10/calendar.   You do have to plan in advance, though, to account for turn-around time on the order.

Alternatively, if you're not a shutterbug and don't have to give the gift right on Christmas day, most of the big chain bookstores will put all of their calendars on sale for half-price shortly after the holiday.

*Makes and especially great gift for MILs who need to have baby pictures to show their friends! ;)

If you're a shutter bug, you can make all sorts of neat gifts through resources on Flickr and other photo sites: mugs, mousepads, etc.

Great ideas, everyone! Some things I've done in the past:

- Select seed packets (herbs or flowers) and give everyone a packet in a small planter (cheap this time of year) with a little note about the symbolism of the plant

- homemade granola - cheap, easy to make, yummy

- buy hot cocoa mix, and add in spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, even a pinch of cayenne. Repackage into a nice glass jar.

- create mix CDs with my favorite new songs of the year

So many interesting things.
I also do a lot.One of them is to have some blu-ray discs as present for someone who are hd films likers.
Often at the same time I have to supply some softwares for them. They all cost my money.

But I like to do these things even though they cost much sometimes.

Also I may imitate some kinds of your ideas to make some new ideas!

Some new ideas about softwares? Blargh.

Yes, this is a good idea. If only there were some way....if only...I had some way to actually rip the blu-rays for my friends....

Yes, it's too late for this year. But in the days/weeks after Christmas it's time to stock up on cards, paper, wrapping, gift bags etc. With those extra frills, it's easy to dress up home-made gifts for cheap.

I am big time into making things, both food and non-food craft items. And I love to comb the thrift stores for raw materials (yarn, fabric, even cheap clothes to cut up and make into something else).

Holiday is coming, this mean we have to start buying perfect gifts to our love ones and relatives or even plan a trip outside the country to enjoy the holiday season.

Oooh, I bet a WII controller would be a perfect gift!  And if I'm lucky, perhaps I will be able to park in the Bristol Airport parking while I jaunt about overseas enjoying the holiday season.

So, here's my idea. We need to change the title of this thread to something like "Arcane Academic Discussions" so that we stop getting spammers. Boring!

I think we should set up the spammers in cage fighting matches.  If I can set up a really good web/conference call, as iinspire promotes, then I don't need to use the Bristol airport to go see my collaborators and/or relatives, as bristolman advocates.  Who will win my heart and my pocketbook this holiday season?

I stopped buying Christmas gifts about 8 years ago. Now, I spend about $20 at <www.heifer.org> and help others at the same time.

This year, I'm purchasing bees and bunnies for my friends, in their honor. I get a lovely card from Heifer and include this in their personal Christmas card. I look philanthropic and everyone is happy to help solve a global problem.

I heard on Oprah: Before you go to any store, check their website and print out coupons. Almost all of them have coupons.

I checked. It's true.

For the last half hour, I have been noodling around on the PBS website, because PBS DVDs are 30% off starting at midnight tonight (Sunday, Nov 29) and ending at midnight on Monday, Nov 30.

Documentaries from the Independent Lens and POV series! NOVA! Masterpiece Theatre! The American Experience!

I'm thinking about getting I, Claudius.  If I didn't already own the American Experience episodes of "We Shall Remain" and "Marcus Garvey: Look for me in the whirlwind," I'd get them.

Here's a link to the entire list, but of course you can use the search function if you're looking for something specific.

BUMP. (Sikora's Meet and Greet thread reminded me of this thread.)

Here is a GREAT $2 gift for a kid under 10. This works well for holidays or party favors.

Buy a $1 helium mylar balloon from Dollar Tree. Tie it to a $1 movie-candy box, also available at Dollar Tree.
