I sent out a bunch of job and postdoc applications last week, and since then have received a few e-mails from SC chairs informing me that my application has been received and that they will review my candidacy seriously. My question is: should I reply to such messages? At first I thought about sending something like: "thank you for your message. I'm looking forward to hearing from you," but now I'm not sure. Is there really a need to reply to such messages? Does it make a better impression or does it appear annoying and e-mail cluttering? Any opinion will be greatly appreciated, as I have several such messages waiting.

As a SC chair I send those notices out as a matter of procedure and politeness. A response is not expected nor is our decision, in anyway, influenced by whether or not you respond to such an email.
