Connecticut is not frozen and I have heard of no rumors that it may freeze, but with the economy the way it is, I wouldn't rule a hiring freeze out.

The governor announced a hiring freeze.  That's what I was told anyway.

Not only is there a freeze, but faculty lines that are in the search phase are being taken away.  Funny thing is we are losing the senior lines and not the junior ones.  This is good news for freshly minted Ph.D.'s.

My goodness, that was an exceptionally good analysis of the forum.

I don't think the Minnesota State system is frozen, or if it is it is only a soft freeze, as there are still lots of open jobs listed on higheredjobs.com

Yeah! Just went I was getting my job search anxiety (read panic) under control, here comes Boston University ordering a hiring freeze! Apparently it doesn't apply to already approved positions, but still... Jesus! what a year to be on the market!

Crap -- they turned me down, and it wasn't because of the hiring freeze.... :(

I think that UMass is on the brink but not quite there and may ultimately not go.

Update: I just got word from UMass today that the search I applied to had been canceled. The email indicated that several searches campus-wide have been canceled.

UMass Amherst? Anybody know anything about other campuses in the system?

Yet from what I understand, their US history search is going forward.

Anyone know if UMass Amherst has canceled its US history searches?

Drew Faust just made the general announcement that HU would be seeking to cut costs.

It doesn't specifically mention freezing searches, but...

Don't forget Beloit and other small schools who have not only frozen hiring, but are cutting positions (including faculty).  Not a good year to be on the market.

Apply to my school!  We're hiring in every open position right now.  (Sorry, CG, we don't have any slots in music, alas, but we're running four or five searches right now, and we've already hired one person.)

It will be tougher soon, though.  Our endowment has lost about $60 million, which amounts to a very whopping $3 million reduction in our 5% spend rate, or about an 8% budget cut on a $38-millionish budget.
