Despite currently being at a UK institution, my supervisor is currently running around like a headless water-fowl (this will make sense if you've ever seen the York campus) due to start of term coming up, so I haven't been able to pin her down to ask her.

I'm currently applying for a job at a UK acadmic institution, and I admit I am a bit puzzled by their request for a "one-page summary (this should include details of experience and other information in support of you application with direct reference to the radvertisement and further particulars) and any supporting documents"

Now I'm guessing the one-page summary will be bullet points going through each of the check-list they give? Is this the same as the cover letter or seperate, and if seperate, does this mean the cover letter needs to be less details (as much of the detail I would have put in will be in the summary). What does it necessarily mean by "supporting materials"

Are you sending in a CV as well? If so, that's definitely part of the supporting materials. If not, then there are obvious things like lists of publications and presentations, which will have to be referenced in the summary.

So, for instance, if the job spec includes something like "evidence of scholarly outreach", your summary would have a short paragraph something like:

I am engaged in a programme of scholarly outreach that disseminates my research at the highest level both nationally and internationally. I present at least once annually at the international level and more frequently at the UK/EU level (see attached list of conference presentations for details).

Um. Only one mug of coffee today. That could be a lot better. But I'm sure you get the general idea.

As you've already guessed, they want you to make their job easier by showing that you meet the essential and desired criteria. I'd also suspect that they want to weed out waffle.

I'd still stick in a fairly detailed cover letter, though.
