Yes (as a client, obviously, not as a practitioner). What would you like to know? It would probably be easier to answer a question that was a little bit more directed rather than to give a general overview, unless that's what you wanted.

The VA uses it as an option in treating PTSD, but doesn't rely solely on it.

It may not be real useful for people with complex PTSD.

Why did you opt out of it?

It may not be real useful for people with complex PTSD.

And why do you say that?

I didn't go for it for one good and one not-so-good reason. The good reason was that my PTSD was not incident-specific - it was more diffuse. (Is this what you mean by "complex," Sikora?) The other reason was that I really disliked the practitioner personally.

EMDR has been fairly well researched. It is extremely helpful as an addition to talk therapy and meds (if needed). It is also quite useful in the treatment of diffuse PTSD and phobias, as well as attachment issues. Those are all extremely complex and difficult issues to treat, period, and not all cases improve. You absolutely must trust the therapist- and be sure you've found one with legit training. It is not a method for dilletantes or beginner therapists. For more info and clinicians in your area, check out: www.emdria.org (or is it .com?).

I opted out because it was my *daughter*--she was about 11 and experiencing anxiety and dizziness that (after numerous medical tests) lead to a therapist.  The therapist used EMDR and passed on the info for us to look at.  I read it decided it was a bit much--other things should be tried first.  I didn't feel right to me.  Since then, she has shed that skin.  Ironically, her PCP told us it was all normal and related to he body changing and that it would pass eventually--he was right, thank dude (who abides)

I should have said that EMDR is not so good along for CPTSD.

There is some interesting overlap between Borderline Personality Disorder and CPTSD both in etiology and in symptomotology, but not an exact match. I am diagnosed with a relatively minor form of CPTSD, but EMDR has not been recommended to me.  One symptom I can truly identify with is the obsession with the abuser.

I'm finding DBT, along with medications, very helpful.  I've stopped the ruminating and obsessing, and I am a lot less anxious.  Working on the sadness and guilt.
