I am in a bit of a bind when it comes to writing samples for my limited search this year. A couple of schools ask for a 25-30 page or c. 10,000-word sample. My problem: I have a book that came out about a year ago. The only other writing I have available are 2 essays/articles forthcoming that are around 20-22 pages each and essentially independent-standing entities. My new book-length research project is up and running, but I am still at least a month away from having anything substantial to show for it (this is job talk territory).
My feeling is that sending a part of the book is bad form since it has been out for so long and since SC members could easily get their hands on it if/when they want to look at it. On the other hand, how bad is it to send something that is under the suggested length the SC has requested? My only other option would be to expand one of the 20-22 page essays into something a bit longer...?

If ads ask for a 25-30 page sample, I think you are very close with the 20-22 page pieces you indicate you have published. 25-30 pages is meant to indicate a ballpark; 20-22 pages indicates a section of that ballpark's bleacher seats. I would send one of those. Indeed, the SC will likely appreciate your brevity!

Lots of people send journal articles that are easily available online, so I don't think that in itself should be an issue. But I would send the newer 22-page piece, because it shows what you are working on now. |

Just blow up the font by .5 and spacing .5 and increase the margin size by a little bit. Presto! 25 pages.
Professors never notice stuff like that.

Under 25 pages - I would send a journal article. I don't know if that's right, but it is what I would consider, in my humanities field. |
