I find myself in a similar situation, though sleeping well at night requires me to push it to the back of my mind. I've actually had my townhouse/condo up for sale for over a year; the mortgage is higher than we'd like. We've had lots of lookers but only one who was looking to make an offer; in the midst of figuring out what kind of offer she was going to make, she lost her job. That sucked, but I felt like we were the lucky ones in that situation.
I often wonder what will happen if I do find a TT job this year and have to move. I find myself hoping that the stars will align and the house will sell just as the offer becomes final. But I'm more inclined to believe that the house will sell too soon and we'll have to move the family into a rental until the job search plays out (nice rentals aren't very plentiful in the rural town where I live) or if it will sell too late and we'll have to pay for a rental in the new place, along with our mortgage here. Whatever happens, I don't think I'd like to rent out our current place, as it would give me less control over how the place looks when potential buyers come through, and I am kind of a control freak. That's why navigating the uncertainties of the housing market and the job market at the same time is so unnerving...it makes it almost impossible to visualize the future, to plan, to relax.
Best of luck to us all!
