I'm trying to find out about different models or forms of academic governance and this seemed the closest forum to ask--are there any books on this topic (of the sort someone might read in grad school or ramping up in an administrative position)?  This question has recently become an issue where I teach.

I once did a project comparing the governance structures of about 40 peer institutions, using faculty manuals and other materials found on institutional websites.  I found that there were three major models of governance -- in brief, they were direct democracy, representative republican, and hierarchical/managerial -- and 40 different particular expressions of those three models.  You might find it interesting to review some websites.
