Author Topic: will negotiating spousal hire endanger tenure chances?  (Read 4956 times)

Several people, including some on this forum, have suggested that having an external offer is key to negotiating a spousal hire. Consequently, I am considering going on the market this year in order to try and negotiate a position for my SO at my current university. At the same time, I don't really want to leave my current position so there is a chance that even if i do get another offer, and even if my current institution refuses to accommodate my spouse, that i might want to stay. I have to put in my tenure file in a year and I wonder whether the process of trying to negotiate a position for SO might affect my tenure chances. Any thoughts?

I have no idea, but if you're worried, then I'm curious: why do you feel the need to go on the market and negotiate the spousal hire this year? Can't it wait a year or two?

it probably can wait. one issue is that there are a lot more jobs for untenured faculty than for tenured ones in my field. also, i guess we are both pretty tired of commuting.

Negotiating about your SO should have no impact on your tenure unless you do it in an offputting way or engage in bad faith bargaining.
