Yes, I am one of those black-wearing humanities types, and I love blackboards. One of my classrooms this semester has a whiteboard and I hate it.
With a blackboard, I am in my element. The subtle scent, the sudden clouds of dust, the unintended (but somehow effective) moments when the chalk breaks as I repeatedly underline for emphasis, and chalk bits fly. I can gesture with chalk. I can throw chalk. With chalk, I dance.
Dry erase markers are just that -- dry. Despite their vulgar display, their beckoning rainbow of color, they are barren. When used, they mock. They make salient points and dfficult terms look like a trip to Candyland. Although tempted mightily, I cannot, will not, throw a dry-erase marker. Dry erase markers are thick and inelegant. Their apparent smoothness is a deceit. One draws -- nay, colors! with a dry erase marker. One can never dance.
Ah, but such posts as the one above can only come after sniffing dry erase markers. Chalk can never give one such a high. I name thee imposter! Alan

Dear alan, my rhapsody in chalk was inspired by it alone.
Sniffing markers is for rank amateurs, who fear the sweet sweet simplicity of chalk. ;)

I do not like the small of the markers. However, that's a small annoyance in comparison to difficulty breathing chalkdust. I do love the ability to write on the board in lots of colors, though I have found colors-that-must-not-be-used do exist. I use the colors to explain the flow of information and data in complex problems.
I can't remember the last classroom I was in that had a chalkboard, actually.

For the many above that seem unaware of this, apparently you can now buy chalk in colors too. Who knew? - DvF

Ah, but the contrast isn't as good and then you still have chalkdust.

Ah, but the contrast isn't as good and then you still have chalkdust. OK, I have to ask it: What the hell do you need different colors of marker (or chalk) for? Really, I've no idea. I've been trying to imagine it all day.

I've been trying to imagine it all day. Those coloured chalks don't erase v well. Besides, they make an even worse mess than white chalk. As much as I love the romance of the chalkboard, dry-erase markers are my preference. I always bring my own, though (as mentioned upthread). Neither markers nor chalk seem able to do anything for my awful printing, or the fact that as a Vertically Challenged Person I can only use ~1/2 the space provided!

I still don't get it.

It's pretty useful in the sciences - my Organic Chem prof and my Physiology prof were esp fond of coloured chalks. In my current life in History, I haven't needed them.

I've been trying to imagine it all day. What kind of question is that? You start off over here, by outlining the topics of the day, in purple. Then, you go over there, and you write or draw out the concept of the day, in green. Then, throughout the discussion, you scribble notes all over that concept of the day, in red. At the end of the session, you write out the homework in blue. In the end, the various colors tie everything together, like a rug.

JP, I take it you only write straight forward notes?
Unlike some of the rest of us, who have to draw interesting and obscure diagrams on the board. Then you have to have a color-coded key to explain the whole thing.

What the three previous posters wrote as to colored markers.
It's also useful in the lab. Different colored notes for different portions of the experiment. I'm experimenting with alternating colors so students can easily distinguish between steps at a glance.

Ah, but the contrast isn't as good and then you still have chalkdust. OK, I have to ask it: What the hell do you need different colors of marker (or chalk) for? Really, I've no idea. I've been trying to imagine it all day. Say, I'm working a cost accounting problem in which the students have to calculate equivalent units for each input, then figure out which portions of the EQs are then used to calculate the cost per unit for each input, and then use that to calculate the amount (in $) of cost recorded in work in process (unfinished) inventory, ending inventory (unsold) and cost of goods sold, then use that info to create an income statement. The whole problem can be worked in one color (say black) but illustrating the flow through of information from one part to another really requires color. Same with recording transactions in financial accounting, posting them to ledgers, then creating a trial balance and developing financial statements from that. I use colors all the time. The color helps highlight the relationships and show the multi-dimensional nature of the information. And, that's not even with drawing any diagrams.
