Your subgroups do not address what I was discussing (avg. top school scores vs avg. bottom school scores). They do in the sense that one assumes a (possibly weak) correlation between GRE score and quality of graduate school. However, give us the numbers you mention and we can talk about them, otherwise it is a useless thing to bring up. With regard to my use of terms, they do mean what I said they mean where I am discussing the mechanics of studies that have examined this mis-analysis in applied settings. No, they are only "mathematical" in the sense that any computation is mathematical. If any of the studies you mention actually derive formulas, instead of just using known formulas and basic properties of distributions to obtain numbers, then please give a citation. - DvF I have no idea what the bolded statement has to do with the point I was making. Your subgroups of secondary and elementary do not address the issue. Further, these are categories that are largely only relevant at the master's level. So let me get this straight application of rules to show how fallacy exists using data is not mathematical??? Look, I really don't care whether you don't think employing known formulas to prove something does not constitute math. The main point is that problem with using the data the way they and you are choosing to use it is at best misleading.

So let me get this straight application of rules to show how fallacy exists using data is not mathematical??? It is not "mathematical statistics". Now more than ever I am convinced that you do not know what the term means. - DvF

What is it that you believe is the basis for applied statistics? What underlies estimation, expectancies, variances, probability theory, etc... Please don't come on here and claim your field is mathematical statistics and think that will scare me off what I know to be a fact.

No actually, you have no idea what you are talking about. Good Lord, man; give up while it is only a flesh wound. Do you fail to understand the irony entailed in the conjunction of words above?

Incidentally, I have not claimed to be anything. Look, this is quite pointless as you seem to not be able to offer anything other than sarcasm to support your point. Look up any Monte Carlo study from 20 years ago (probably more) where they test estimators of subgroup or nested means from sample means since you are so interested in why I am referring to mathematical statistics. Please do not project your inferiority complex on me, I simply stated an argument against the use of data by posters here based on what is known about the way means behave in applied settings based on theory that is some 50 years old. I would be glad to hear any substantive argument you have.

This place is clearly for children. For all the talk about GRE scores, clearly there aren't many high ones here.

Why exactly do you feel the need to hurl insults at both individuals and huge groups of people (the whole forum?)? I'm puzzled.

Yes, almost everyone of the CHE forum majored in Education from top colleges. Most have advance degrees in Education. My GPA was 1.5, my GRE verbal was 350 and my math score was 375. With them big scores, I got into Columbia (I had some other qualifications, such as life experience with cat herding).
