Sorry to double-post, but should I keep these shoes? I found them at Nordstrom Rack for $70. I really like how they fit and look, but I wear pretty non-girly shoes to lab (converse, docs, fryes, branching out into slighly more feminine wedges and chunky-heel boots). These seem like funky sensible shoes to wear with funky sensible work outfits. I feel like they're more librarian (an excellent look but it would be a shift for me) than rocker.

Why do I turn shoes into an existential question?

Ooooh, Paul Green.  They do have a great look, but those high straps look very stiff and inflexible.  I am going to guess that they might cut into the front of your foot, and that that problem would not be solved by breaking them in.  Still, that would be unlike Paul Green to have such an obvious design flaw.

Yes.  The strap hits above the flexion point on your ankle.

Modified to add: I am assuming they are black.  I support the black version.

These are apparently only for men but perhaps women wearing them is not completely taboo.

I really don't get this fad.

Wow.

I bought these (on sale on amazon for $20) for a wedding, wore them ALL DAY LONG, and didn't have any issues.

I lurve them. If they go back on sale, pick them up. I don't know anything about the company (Gretta), but I'd take a chance on a cute pair if you see one by them - these suckers are pretty high heels for me, but they're very wearable.

Shoe tragedy! I hurt my foot dancing, and now I have custom orthotics to take the pressure off while it heals. They only fit in one pair of shoes, my beloved Converse. I want to buy something else they'll fit in.

The orthotics are about the thickness of standard hiking insoles. They will only work in shoes with removable insoles. Anything with a heel or wedge, putting more weight on the ball of my foot, is out.

Any ideas for brands with removable insoles, or online stores to browse? I want black leather shoes - flats or ankle boots or maybe oxfords - that have plenty of space so my instep doesn't get squished. I think Naot shoes have removable insoles, and some Merrells, and maybe Gentle Souls. I wear black skinny jeans and skirts, generally with ankle boots, ballet flats, or motorcycle boots; if I were as cool as I'd like to be (and as wealthy) I'd wear Ann Demeulemeester and Rick Owens but the reality is more jeans and t-shirts.

Would these be too frumpy? Or are they goth-frumpy-cool, which would be great?

They're cute. But they seemed a little plain in comparison to your description of what you normally wear. It sounds like you're not in love with these shoes, but maybe that's not what you need now. What you need are a versatile pair that will go with your wardrobe, I think these would work for that.

But then, perhaps you should not take advice from someone who just ordered these, in red. I'm not sure what I was thinking; now they seem too little-girly. We'll see when they arrive, I guess.

I don't think those red ones are little-girly. Cute but not cutesy.

Greyscale, I know for certain that Merrells have removable insoles, as I've got a couple pairs that are sort of Mary Jane-like.

That said, if you like the big chunky boots, what about a pair of Doc Martens?

This is a wee bit off topic but

I'm going on a spring break trip to Egypt and we will be walking around Cairo all day, walking to the pyramids, climbing a mountain (mount hatshepsut), walking to Luxor. Ok, maybe not really walking from Cairo to Luxor but still...

We are supposed to talk minimal luggage.

Any suggestions for shoes that would look good with what I plan to be wearing: longish skirts or a kurta and harem pants?

I am happiest in kitten heels, black croc pumps with a pointy toe, rounded toe for most other shoes.
I've got a latinized or other ethnicized Audrey Hepburn aesthetic.
To give you an idea I like
these 40s-like pumps though I spend far less on my shoes usually

I purchased these beauties from anthropologie because they were on sale for  $60 they hurt like crazy though.

I usually wear ballerina flats for walking alot, even in a city.

I'm worried about this mountain hike.
Oh, and I have about 10 dollars in my bank account. So why am I bothering to even ask? Just curious I guess.
Alas.

Merce,
That is certainly a shoe challenge! I'd say you could do it with a one pair of sandals and one pair of ballet flats, but the mountain hike throws that off. However, there are ballet/mary jane flats that have more of a sneaker-type base (e.g., Skechers, Ahnu) which you might get by with for the hike.

What is the hike going to be like? Climbing up the mountain, or walking a nicely groomed trail?

I am indeed a Doc Martens kind of girl, but the orthotics don't fit in them, sadly. I have very high insteps and Docs don't have removable insoles. I am sad.

I found a local store with the Arcopedico shoes and they are pretty good but not ideal. Thanks for the Merrells suggestion - iirc, some of them even have hiking-style insoles so they'll leave lots of space for mine. I'll see what they have at Nordstrom or REI.

Merce, if you can find a perfect solution for your challenge, you will be the envy of shoe-loving travelers everywhere. (Actually these Arcopedico shoes I'm considering would be good for that, but they make me think of nun shoes, way too practical. But still, maybe something in that same European vein. Camper? Born?)

I just bought some Ahnu shoes and they do have removable insoles. Maybe their crissy or lucia would suit you. In any case, keep looking, there's something out there!

I searched for "goth creepers removable insole" and got some interesting hits.

These boots seem like maybe you'd wear them even after orthotics were finished? And  this link has about a million types of creepers. (New Rock seems to have removable insoles pretty reliably.) (Here is a classic creeper, but New Rock are expensive—unless you'd wear them after they wouldn't be worth it, I don't think.)

Oh! Thanks! New Rocks are the hip goth thing these days, I'm told, but I'm not a real goth so I haven't looked at them up close. Never occurred to me that they'd have insoles. I will expand my possibilities away from regular comfort shoes.

These orthotics are so weird! It's like walking with a giant stone in my shoe. They have a big lump in the middle to keep weight off the ball.
