I think it is time to bring out the boots.  I find this time of year sartorially challenging - I want to hang on to summer, but I don't want to look ridiculous or, worse, be cold.  Once I start wearing boots, there is no turning back until May.

My best-ever shoe purchase was a pair of black leather, flat, simple and unadorned knee-high boots from Nine West.  I purchased them on sale for $30 in 1997 and I still wear them a lot, under wool pants, with tights and skirts, and even over skinny jeans (though I'm still not sure if I'm doing that right).  I've worn them to job interviews in blizzards and been complimented on my sensible but classy choice!

The fact that I have worn them for so long is down to two amazing discoveries that I will share with all of you.  One:  shoe polish.  I polish all our shoes about once a month.  I can't believe that, once upon a time, I thought that I had to throw out slightly scruffy looking shoes, when in fact they just needed a polish.  Two:  cobblers.  I've had the boots reheeled twice and I've had non-slip soles put on.  I find that even with fairly expensive shoes, I run down the heels really quickly.

I was just thinking the other day that I'm not even sure my city has a cobbler.

Usually they are located inside the local boot shop, or the local boot shop will be able to recommend someone reasonably nearby.

I love my Munroes--very cute and generally quite comfortable (I got mine at Nordstrom, which does have the best shoe department anywhere...).

My dressy evening shoes are Munroes and I agree, Nordstrom's for the best bricks and mortar shoe store.
I also like Sierra Trading and Shoebuy.com.
My dress business shoes are Jenny by Ara.

If necessary, I wear Danskos or Clarks. I have a very good pair of Dansko clogs that are extremely comfortable. However, my new secret shoe weapon are Frye Engineer boots. I have the black ones. They fit under my trousers and you can't see the buckles, so they don't look too outlandish, but they are very comfortable, I get a tremendous sense of confidence from wearing them, plus an extra couple of inches in height (I am already 5'11', so this is not strictly necessary, but what the heck!). Oh, yes - and my feet no longer get wet in the snow and rain.

I would love these. Also, these.

I have the red malibrans.
They are exquisite and *very* comfortable.

I am seriously considering the yellow ones as a birthday present to myself. My Fluevogs are some of the most comfortable shoes I own.

Check out these shoes and especially the prices.  I have never bought these before but at these prices I will give some boots a try:

All Annie footwear now $14.95

My Frye boots are reserved for extreme weather and hiking.  I have a pair from the George Strait collection, I guess that makes them Western.

For just rain when it's not cold out, I bought a pair of rubber Klogs.  Ugly but comfy.

I've seen Fluevog shoes discussed here in various threads, and they sound like they're worth checking out.   Does anyone have recommendations as far as sizing?  I read the information on the site but am still unsure about whether to go for the larger or smaller half size.

It really depends on which shoe.  I have two different fluevogs, and in one (the malibran), I wear my usual size, but in the other (lucille), I wear a full size and a half larger.  I usually wear an 8, so in the Lucile, I wear a 9.5.  The best advice, if you can't go to nirvana a fluevog store is to order from zappos or another store that offers free shipping and returns.

Where I live, a nice pair of open-toed sandals and a pedicure are all you really need.

But I totally want some Frye Boots.

Frye Boots are killer.  I have a pair that I bought at DSW or Off-Braodway or something probably 5 years ago now, and they are really comfortable and well-made.  I expect that they'll last me for many years to come.

Pink_Lady, that's a good suggestion (shop from an online store that has free shipping and returns).  Buying shoes online is so convenient but so frustrating sometimes because of sizing.  I tend to wear different sizes depending on the type of shoe in any case.
