Let's get summer over with! Me want snow!

« Reply #165 on: August 20, 2009, 01:35:58 PM »

Okay, I'm reviving this because I've got something weird going on that doesn't fit in any of the other threads we've currently got going.

I had blood drawn on Friday. Never mind what for, it isn't relevant. What is relevant is that when she put the needle in, a shooting pain went down my arm to my wrist that subsequently felt like it was on fire. The phleb and I both thought she'd hit a nerve. When I went back to the room to see the doc about the results, I mentioned the pain (which I still felt). He didn't think it was a nerve, but my sensitivity due to the Isaac's. Well, it continued to hurt over the weekend but seemed to be getting better by yesterday. Today however, certain movements cause a shooting pain again and it aches. There is also a long narrow section from midway down my forearm to my hand that is sensitive to the touch. Otherwise, there is no swelling (that I can see), redness, etc.

I'm thinking I'm just going to have to wait this out, but it sounds like the nerve is inflamed. Any ideas?

I'm thinking, like you, that it may just be another lovely manifestation of the Isaac's. Even without added inflammation, your nerves are super-sensitized and are continuously stimulating your muscles, right? Perhaps the needle stick really set off a burst in that one area, which is why it has also spread down your arm?

Also, keep in mind that the meds may be changing the way you react to stuff, too. The Relafen my doc put me on for the joint inflammation and pain (apparently) ended up super-sensitizing my whole immune system, which may have fed the anaphylactic allergic reaction.

But definitely keep track of this and report it to your doc!

You've presented two possibilities: either she hit a nerve, or it's an enhanced reaction due to Isaac's.

Are these necessarily mutually exclusive?  Could it be both?

Yay. Great. The upped dose seems to be getting the twitching to subside, but now I'm going to add fun new symptoms? You are probably right. If it doesn't subside by tomorrow, I'll talk to the nurse about it when I call about my prescription refill.

On preview: Post_functional, yes it could be due to both since the Isaac's also affects the nerves to some extent. It mainly bothers me because I've never had a reaction to a needle like this before, and I've had LOTS of needles.

If nerves are inflammed or ultra-sensitive, it's very likely that a nerve could get affected by needle. The major arteries, veins and nerves run right next to each other.

You aren't making me feel any better here! ;)

Yeah. I just wish it would go AWAY.

This sounds very similar to what happened when a nurse took blood from me and hit a nerve.  It hurt for days, subsiding a little, then coming up again when I did something stupid like lifting a pen.  It went away slowly, but it did go away.  I also never had a reaction like that to a needle (and I have not had a similar reaction since).  It was one, fluke accident.  The same nurse had taken blood multiple times from me from the same arm, and something shifted in my arm to make everything not work.  I wish you the best, and I hope you get better.

I've had blood taken by this same person before as well, so I'm not upset with her. Just my dadgum nerves.

I damn near passed out this afternoon.  Just walking down the hall from class back to my office . . . all of a sudden had to clutch the wall and stop for a minute.  Yes, I'm teaching an overload, but it's half what I used to do as an adjunct and minus the insane driving to and fro.  I could barely keep my eyes open driving home, and was then nearly T-boned by a snowflake neighbor (see Venting Thread).

Fatigue is my baseline state of being, but it's the third. freaking. day. of. the. semester.

This does not bode well.

And hugs to GM--that through which you persevere makes my various issues seem like nothing but an itch I can't scratch.

Comp_Queen, I'm sorry to hear you had such a rough day! A couple of thoughts on the dizziness/faintness issue: are you on any meds that might be causing this? And also, being a little dehydrated can do this to me--was that in play?

I went through around a year of some pretty major dizzy/faint episodes, including when I was in the car and had to pull over. Part of it apparently had to do with being on three different meds that cause it --including both of my asthma meds! I also used to live at 4500 feet, and do significantly better now that I'm at sea level.

You know what, Ms. P, that may be it--the water (I hope) not the meds--I don't take any.  I was notorious in my day camp counselor days for being so focused on helping the kids remember to drink their water that I forgot to drink mine, and it has been hot and muggy here.  What is it supposed to be anyway?  8 oz. per hour or something?

My allergist has me at 1 oz/1 lb per day.  I struggle to drink that much though.

Lately there seems to be a serious lack of agreement about what constitutes "enough" water, and which fluids do and don't count--yet another of those things that's not at all well-researched. I tend to have trouble keeping track of drinking enough, too, right up until I get dizzy. :)

Gah. Cystitis. I hate cystitis.

Somebody remind me to get up in time to play telephone tag with the GP's receptionist in the morning.
