Hi All,

I'm currently looking at my research plans for the next few years, and am trying to figure out how I will manage to meet publication requirements for the next research assessment/REF exercise, AND fit in having baby #2. As I understand it, the results will inform funding from 2014, which will mean the peer assessment part of the exercise will take place in 2013. (I'm in the humanities, so I figure this will remain a crucial part of the whole thing.) I'm assuming, therefore, that the submission date for items will be the end of 2012. (Meaning that all publications will need to be with publishers by the end of 2011). I'm pretty new to all of this, though. Can anyone confirm that this sounds like a reasonably accurate timetable for everything (in as much as we know about the REF at this point)?

Thanks (and I hope that made sense?!)

If you just publish as you would do without the REF, you should be fine. After all, the current RAE only takes 4 or was it 5 articles into account. That's really not much. Do not let these assessments change your approach to your work. Just work as if you were planning to go up for a promotion in 4 or 5 years.

It's not clear but I think the REF will be run in 2014 which would mean publications through 2013, i.e. 6 years worth.

But I agree with DvF - the emphasis is on quality though to be safe you should make sure you have 4 high quality pubs by the end of 2012.

It's not procrastination. It's "just in time" delivery.
