I've taught online classes a couple of times.  Has anyone here had any issues with Vista, Microsoft's new OS with their online teaching?  At present, our univ. is using WebCT.  As I work on a Mac, I'm wondering if this may be an issue next time I teach an online class.

many thanks!

We use Blackboard Enterprise 7. (BTW, WebCT as an entity no longer exists. They were bought out by Blackboard.)  The only item that noticeably affects online classes in and of themselves is the browser.

The ancillary material (things a student would need to download or run) or completing/submitting assignments: different story. What kind of things are you specifically worried about? And did you talk to your tech guy about what they have seen?

Look at the WebCT support site to see what browsers and OSs it supports.

For example, eCollege supports IE, Firefox 2 (but not 3 yet), and Safari. Moodle supports everything, which is how it should be.

The only reason you'd have trouble is when the LMS vendor uses non standard web coding.  (Which they have been known to do.)

Vista is what Blackboard's done to WebCT, and it's the worst of both worlds.  I think it's a bit more user-friendly towards PCs (or maybe that's just my school's IT dept.) but the format shouldn't be a problem.  The system can be frustrating, though, so I'd definitely play around with it and then meet with your IT people to get a training course, and present them with a list of your questions.

It appears the OP asked about Microsoft's operating system (also called Vista) rather than Blackboard Vista.  It can get very confusing when one is using Blackboard's Vista on a Microsoft Vista computer.

Got it!  I was thinking of the previous thread, too, I think.  Yeah, they really weren't thinking, were they?  How much do they pay the market research guys?

I'm using WebCT (now owned by Blackboard, but it's still the WebCT product) from a PC running Vista, and I've had no problems.  I did have a problem initially (last winter, when I first bought this computer) because I had a newer version of Java than the school was running, but that's been resolved.  Since then, everything has been fine.  I use Firefox as my browser, and I'm always a little nervous about updates because of last year's problem, but so far everything has been fine.  All of the LMS's functions seem to work perfectly (as far as the word "perfect" can be applied to WebCT, that is), I can upload files (text, video, photo, etc.) without a problem, all the links work, etc.

BTW, am I the only one who's frustrated that the LMS discussion boards doesn't have a "quote" function like our CHE boards do?
