I've been thinking about online mortgage companies for a new home purchase (we're first time homebuyers). Is this a good idea (low interest rates and low closing costs) or a very bad idea? Has anyone used online mortgage companies? What has your experience been?

I haven't, and not sure I would. Needless to say, do a lot of background research on the company. One thing you DEFINITELY want to do is make sure they have a "local" (USA if you live there) address that is posted on their website. You don't want to have them go bust and find out they're in a country that makes it impossible to go after them.
