Attend the dept party?

Does it make any difference to you chairs if an adjunct attends department parties? The department party is coming up tomorrow, and I (non-TT) really don't want to attend, but I do want to keep teaching as much as possible at the university.

I don't mind. A gracefully written "regrets" email is fine. The real question, however, is whether or not your colleagues are similarly laid back about it.

I agree with Waxwing. Nice if you go, not a problem if you don't. Not even sure if you need to RSVP; depends on how personal the party and its invitation really is.

Depends on your department I guess. I used to work at a place where adjuncts and research professors and other non-TT people were definitely not welcome to anything. To quote my department chair: "I don't need to talk to
people like you
".

Tenured, non-tenured TT, non-tenure track (lecturers), adjuncts, and staff are all welcome at our department parties.
Waxwing is correct - if you don't want to attend, send a simple regret RSVP to the invite.
