I have questions – I hope someone here has answers.

Do the CHE editors seek out ideas for articles from these fora? Do they cruise the threads, trying to glean what is on the collective mind of academics everywhere? And if the editors get an idea for an article from the fora, do they invite posters to contribute, or do they have a stable of authors to draw on?

Here's one set of answers.

Sometimes.

Yes.

Crossover from the fora to the rest of the CHE happens in a variety of ways: by solicited contribution ("I'm a writer for the Chronicle and I'm writing a story/column about X; you are invited to share your thoughts about X for possible publication"), by someone from the CHE staff noticing an interesting idea for a story and contacting forumites (via PM or email) whose experiences are relevant to that idea, and by other kinds of cherry-picking as well. And probably in other ways I don't know about.

Thank you! And especially for the link to the live discussion, which is an area of the Chronicle I somehow had not noticed before.

Considering the snark directed at First Person authors recently, it's a brave person who'd write a piece for the Chronicle.

The flaying and flogging will start soon, I'm sure.

Well,
I asked a question in the live forum of Liz about getting published in the CHE. I followed that up with an e-mail explaining my areas of expertise and the subject about which I would like to write. The area was topical (University of California's consideration as to whether to change its admission's policy). I submitted a couple of examples of my published writing on relevant topics. I was invited to submit an article and I can honestly say that I've never worked with more thorough people than the people at the CHE.

I've heard that the CHE editors are easy to work with. It's the CHE readers (well, some of them) who are contentious, as we see on these fora.
