Has anyone else found a relation between your desire to go to a school and the time it takes to complete your part of the application?
Absolutely! There's a postdoc I'm angling for. Decent pay, not many teaching responsibilities (but enough to sate my appetite for teaching), good benefits, travel and research funding, and best of all, it's located near where my postdoc research will take place and near a research center at a different university with which I will be affiliated. The deadline for application is mid-November, and I have been lining my ducks up (getting That Really Important Chapter done, squaring up additional letters of recommendation, fine-tuning my statement of future research, etc), and crafting the application since September. It had better be damn well near perfect. I sent off an app yesterday at what amounts to my "dream" school, and I worked on it all day before making myself mail it.
Tell about Dream U! What makes it so dreamy?

Strong undergraduate program, nice balance between teaching and research, location, nice campus. It's also partially a contrast effect. The two schools where I think I should be most competitive are in (for me) less-than-ideal locations. That said, given the economy, I honestly will be happy anywhere.

I hear you. One of the people writing me letters of rec asked me the other day if I really wanted to work at East Nowhere College for Dimwits.
Yeah, I do. I just want a job.

What is up with these positions that are advertised yesterday, with deadlines tomorrow? I've found three of them today. THREE. Actually, one of them, advertised yesterday, has a deadline that is already passed.
For the love of all that's good and holy! WTF?

Insider searchers? I think I have one.The ad was so specific that it looked like a paragraph out of a research statement. Fancy Pants U is hiring for a position in basket weaving. We would prefer an emphasis historical basket weaving. Perhaps from say the 1800s. Maybe 1837. Yes a researcher who has an extensive program on basket weaving in 1837 would be ideal. Not that we're thinking of anyone.

Just sent a packet with a cover letter with a stupid typo.

10/15, you're going to be the death of me. And if you're not, 11/1 will be for sure.

So just don't don't psyche yourselves out in advance.

Resurrecting an old thread...
I'm on the market and so far--especially given the economic conditions--I've been feeling pretty good. I even had one phone interview.
Our department is also running a search. No big deal. Until this morning when I found out we have candidates scheduled to come in NEXT WEEK. When I heard that, my palms literally started to sweat. Ugh.

Everyone still alive? Just checking. I barely survived 10/15 and 11/1. Now the beast known as 11/15 has turned somewhat predatory.

This might make you guys feel a bit better. I recently was asked for more materials for a job. The interesting bit? I left out a word in the cover letter (as in, there is an operative word missing from a sentence). I'm not proud of that, but it obviously didn't completely kill my chances.
Everything will be okay. Everything will be okay. Everything...

Actually, that doesn't help. I haven't left out any words, and still nothing. This clearly means that I am utterly undesirable as a potential hire, and will end up working at the Starbucks.

No. You are undesirable because, as you demonstrate, your logic is terrible. Kidding! It is too early to tell. Don't freak out yet. Besides, even if you don't get a TT job for next year, you might get a VAP or a research gig, and those ads may not even have been posted yet.

Thanks. I feel better now that I've had lunch (although I was very distracted today in the class I'm teaching). It's funny, because I know that every school has its own timeline, it's still early, my best "fit" jobs just closed or will close later this month, but I kind of felt like you do when you find out a previous partner/SO is dating someone else. No matter how much you know you're better off now, it's always a bit of a shock--or at least it has been for me. Anyway, I'm sure by tomorrow (my application day) I'll be motivated to get those last few apps finished.

No. You are undesirable because, as you demonstrate, your logic is terrible. Ha ha! It's funny because it's true! May the postdoc gods smile upon my ability to laugh at myself.
