The ads are starting to come out for Fall 2009 jobs, and this is my first year on the market.
I am so totally unprepared for this. My stomach is doing somersaults.
Anyone else in the same boat?

Yes. I'm trying my best to get prepared by trying to put together my teaching statement ()help here:) http://www.utexas.edu/academic/cte/teachfolio.htmland reformatting my CV Neither of these accomplishes the largest impediment to my candidacy - finishing the dissertation.....

I'll be searching too. I'm also geographically tied so my search will be very short and very small.
A part of me is envious of my cohort who get to toss their nets wide and go where they will.

Yes, those early ads are making my stomach churn also. Especially since, in my field, they all seem to be tiny flyover u's who are wanting way too much in terms of qualifications. I expect I'll see some more realisitc ads soon.
I'm not technically full-on going on the market this year, but I might apply to a few, too-good-to-be-true-because-I'm-already-super-qualified positions. So, I'll be paying close attention to the ads, and that's enough to start making me batty. (I've already got a job I love, but I will one day be moving on, and sooner rather than later, so it never hurts to look!)
Don't forget to throw fellowship apps into the mix, too, and ulcer city, here I come!
I think part of the drama is the sheer amount of time between job posting & start date. It's just amazing.

That's a great link, Smartypants! Thanks! Neither of these accomplishes the largest impediment to my candidacy - finishing the dissertation.....
I hear you. I'm marathon dissertating until mid-September to get as much done as possible, so that my referees can actually write something substantial about my dissertation and its imminent completion. As it stands now, I've got a bit of finished crap, an outline of crap, some more disjointed crap, a couple of images, and just general, random crap that may or may not be important. Somehow, between now and mid-September, all this crap must be turned into something praise-worthy. Yes, those early ads are making my stomach churn also. Especially since, in my field, they all seem to be tiny flyover u's who are wanting way too much in terms of qualifications.
I KNOW!!! It's freaking me out!

I KNOW!!! It's freaking me out! Don't forget the merits of the Crappy Rough Draft (CRD). If you can put all that crap into one, logically-flowing document, then you've got the CRD. Good luck!

Total denial. None of this -- including this thread -- exists until September. I'm still teaching summer school, for heaven's sake!
Diss? What's a diss? Who are you and what are you doing in my mind?

Yes, but it only has to be crappily logical. Or logically crappy.

Freaking out!!!
It happens about once a week, for no discernible reason. Nothing's changed since last week. Well, except that my CRD (Crappy Rough Draft) is roughing it along. But I've started crafting cover letters. Scary.
How's the job hunt preparation going for you guys?

I am meeting with my grad adviser today to go over my cover letter, draft research proposal, and teaching portfolio. He graciously agreed to look them over, and hopefully his feedback won't just freak me out even more!
I'm also meeting with my diss adviser tomorrow to get feedback on the first chapter I have her. I'll also be giving her two more to look over!
I can't believe this is all happening at once.
p.s. why is "adviser" right, "advisor" wrong? It's "advisory," right?

Remember that those ads are often wish lists rather a set of expectations. In a small department we often have a lot of gaps in our curriculum, but also have to cast a wide net to get a decent pool. "It would be great to have someone to teach X, and our students have expressed interest in Y, and Z is a growing field. So lets put out an ad for a XYZist and hire the best person who is willing to come to Flyover U." Cut to the graduate bull pen at Mega U. "Hey look, Podunk U thinks it is going to get someone to teach X and Y and Z! Where Harvard only expects someone to do X! Crazy rubes!"

Oddly, the dictionaries I have on hand list both as acceptable, and Word's spellcheck also has no problem with advisor.

My concern is more with the desire of seemingly every institution to find someone with a history of strong research and teaching experience and professional service and demonstrated ability to get grants and community service and... and... and... And all these qualifications for a one-year non-tt contract. I've got a padded CV, a Crappy Rough Draft, some good recommendations, and a kick-ass cover letter. The end.

I need that cover letter. I am convinced that all I need is the interview and I'm in. I'm much more interesting than most of my colleagues, a more engaging public speaker, and a more effective teacher. All I need is that job talk, and I'm golden. Unfortunately, I can't imagine MY padded CV and strong recs is enough to get me there.
Sorry for the horn-tooting, but I do rock. More to the point, most of my peers are pretty boring and self-conscious in front of a classroom/SC.
NO WHAMMIES!
