Does your downtown branch have reciprocal arrangements with a nearby gym for their students/faculty? Some of the nicest gyms I've ever seen were in high rises and frequented by banker types over the noon hour. Worth checkin'.

Dr_Dre- yep. No shower at my CC's campus (the one that has my office). The other campus (main one) does have one, however. Our car payment ends next year and we plan on getting a family membership at the YMCA. Since there's one near my campus, that will fix the shower issue.

Get yourself a big bucket.  Stand in it.  Turn on the safety shower in the chem lab.  Unless you are at one of those rare campuses that has a drain for the safety shower.  Then forego the bucket.  If anyone asks, you are working with deadly chemical right before work each morning and must use the safety shower to make sure no one else comes into contact with it indirectly.  This should also ensure you plenty of privacy during the shower.

OK. At about 80 gal/min, it would have to be both a *large* bucket and a very quick shower.

I could tell peopl I will be working with dihydrogen monoxide and need to properly decontaminate myself each morning.

I wonder how many people won't figure out "dihydrogen monoxide"!

According to snopes, quite a few: http://www.snopes.com/science/dhmo.asp

(OK -- let's try that link again, and again...)

At one uni where I taught, the psych building how showers, due to experiments they ran.

This is what I want to know more about.  Sounds like a good movie plot to me.

CC Alan, your commitment leaves me awestruck.  But you know, come fall, it will be a different sweat-story.  Maybe there is some possibility for a temporal bump-up of the Y membership?

Movie plot? I probably missed out on writing a box-office success about it all. At the time, though, I didn't really want to know what they were up to in that psych building, where I had been placed due to a space crunch on campus (I am in the humanities). It was in the basement (natch) and home to many monkeys, off down a guarded corridor. Naturally, we all referred to it as the monkey bin. There was a complicated security system and a huge sign on the door stating that that no one under 21 years of age was admitted. However, they had awesome showers!

I'd love to ride to work, but the route I'd have to take is just too treacherous.

Maybe I should move.

OK, sorry, I didn't realize this was an animal behavior facility.  The showers were for washing the cages.

You think? Seems like some of those psychologists might have taken the chimps' example and taken the occasional shower!

ccAlan,

You might find that sweating is less of an issue if you get racks or paniers to hold your clothes, papers, and computers. If you can get this stuff off your back, you will be much less sweaty when you get to work.

Bike shops also sell biking backpacks that have a wire frame that keeps the stuff in the backpack from resting on your back. They are actually pretty comfortable and will make the ride seem cooler than it will with a regular backpack.

Good luck with this!

I'll just bet he'll sweat less if his clothes are on a rack!

NY has the naked cowboy so why can't my city have the naked cyclist?

It took me a couple of weeks to find a good combination of rack and panniers but I have everything off my back and on the rack. It's fine during the ride until I stop and then the minimal evaporation during my cool-down kicks in.

CC Alan, your commitment leaves me awestruck.  But you know, come fall, it will be a different sweat-story.  Maybe there is some possibility for a temporal bump-up of the Y membership?

It's too bad that it took higher gas prices to finally motivate my lazy @$$ to do something about it! No chance of bumping up the Y membership. We're tight on finances right now.

I'd love to ride to work, but the route I'd have to take is just too treacherous.

Maybe I should move.

I grew up in San Diego and while the city is covered in bike lanes, all the ones I rode on were on the street. So, when I tried cycling around more of the city, I kept getting flats since all the road carp seemed to end up in the bike lane. I actually got a double flat one time and that's when I gave it up.

This city has commuter/bike trails criss-crossing all over the place with many off-street options.

Hi there!
great idea!!
I second the suggestion that you get a carrier or some kind of rack instead of carrying everything on your back. It cuts WAY down on the sweat.
I also ride about 45 minutes each way to the university, but I'm in no hurry and I don't arrive sweaty, so there is no reason to need a shower. I think it is all a matter of pacing. There is no need for biking to not be compatible with professional clothes, unless you want to ride fast. There are plenty of people on their way to work here on bikes!
I really commend your decision about how to spend that money. Now everyone else should follow your example! The more bikes on the rode, the better the drivers will have to get, I figure!

Right.  I really need to quit speeding up those hills.
