Hi! I’d like to be an educator but I’m not sure which good education degrees that I can specialize in? The ones with good pay and don’t take so long to complete? I’d like to pursue the courses online.
Most online programs in education are not for licensure, but for educational and salary advancement since education pays per credential. If this is your first time going into education and you're not licensed, it may be a good idea to attend a traditional program. Walden University has a licensure track online program but I'm not quite sure how it works since you will only be gaining licensure in the state of Minnesota. My advice.... for your license... stay traditional. You will be able to find the modeling and mentoring that is necessary for a new educator.

i like university of phoenix online. they offer many programs esp in the education field. cheaper than traditional universities for sure, and they really try to fit around your needs and schedule
Apparently, however, the University of Phoenix does not teach the rules of proper capitalization and punctuation.

Cheaper? Nope. Is jlee1980 a paid advertiser for U of P? If so, U of P should demand a refund. Such shabby ads and so poorly placed (I mean, c'mon, people; how many of us want a U of Phoenix degree to round out our collections?) suggest idiocy.

Sorry to raise a zombie thread, but people here seriously thought I was some sort of "bot"? I'm not exactly a frequent user here, but there was nothing in my post that warranted that kind of accusation.
I responded to a question that seemed perfectly valid, and dealt with a topic that I am very familiar with. I was referring to the well established alternative licensure programs that exist in my state (Kansas) and many others. One of them here is run by the University of Kansas, others are run by other state universities and private colleges. These are not fly-by-night operations, nor are they degree mills.
They're run by schools of education (at least, the ones I know of), and some are primarily distance education. The sheer distances involved here have dictated that several schools offer the coursework mainly online. This serves rural districts (and others distant from the college towns) very well. You have a local mentor, and the university sends out observers to watch you teach periodically throughout your (three-year, in my case) program.
The pre-requisites include a bachelor's degree in the field you want to teach in, or a closely related area. Since I had bachelor's and master's degrees in physics, this was not a problem.
Those of you who think the only valid option is to go to a "traditional" program should be aware that many if not most of the "traditional" schools of education are offering alternative routes to licensure as I described above. The number of teachers entering the profession this way is growing very rapidly, and from what I can see it is very effective; 50% of my department (bio/phys/chem) is made up of people who went through alternative licensure programs.

Actually, most of us thought that the OP, "abbottsteve," was the bot. The general consensus afterwards was that you were a real poster. Since, as you say, you don't spend a lot of time here, let me describe for you the classic spam-bot setup for online degree program spamming on the fora: 1. New poster, with 1 post, makes (usually poorly-written and/or misspelled) inquiry about online degrees in a way that makes it clear that he/she has no business being in grad school in the first place. 2. Another new poster, also usually with 1 post, comes along and says "Hey! I have the answer to your question! Check out these sites!" ... followed by links to online degree programs. As you can see from the following post, that did indeed happen on this thread: Regarding the spam, which was removed pretty quickly: it does seem a lot of effort for people to go to: first placing the inquiry, and then putting the fake reply with the link to the site. I agree that it wasn't a legitimate request for info, but I'm surprised that someone would make such effort to promote their site when it had such little chance of success. The spam post was up for a few hours, maybe, if that.
Since you weren't really around for the discussion, you probably missed this whole thing. Glad to know you are a real person. You might want to stick around and make some more posts so people become even more convinced of this. The spam regarding online programs is particularly common, so it will help to establish a reputation as a real live poster and not a bot promoting a program. VP

Well, thanks. I was glad to see it resolved (and that at least a few people thought I was human!), but it was a little unsettling.
