How do I go about consolidating my school loans?

I'm beginning to look at my school debt, before it comes due (5 months). I need to consolidate, I think. Can you give me advice about how to do this, who to choose if I have a choice? Thanks!

I have the same question as yourself. What is the best way to consolidate student loans that are due, in my case, in a few months? What is the best way? What would others suggest? And what impact will the July 2009 new laws have on those of us that teach at public institutions?

Here's all I can tell you:
There will be many companies contacting you in hopes that you will consolidate your loans with them.
I am probably a poor example of how to do it right, though. I just stuck with Sallie Mae because I figured "better the devil you know than the devil you don't."

Can you not consolidate with the gov't anymore? Or, perhaps the Dept. of Ed interest rate is not as low as it once was? Do consider consolidating
before
you officially finish. I did not consolidate until after I was done (which is what I thought I was supposed to do), and thus could not get a deferrment on repayment. Instead of waiting 6-12 months to start monthly payments, I had only a 3 month grace period. Check the rules on this, but I advocate avoiding student loan payments as long as possible.
