Raising the Bar for Black Colleges?

How many majority institutions could do what Howard has done? Isn't it time for the academic community, of all segments in society, to knock off the qualifiers? Howard's success doesn't make it the best of a small subset of some "other" class of institutions. It puts it higher in the ranking of all institutions.

It's clearly possible for HBCU's to raise funds, but if the HBCU has a dysfunctional administration they're not going to be organized enough to pull it off.
Most HBCU's rely more on corporate and foundation support than on alumni giving, which is something that will have to change if they want to do what Howard did.

Howard is to be commended, $275M is great. They will have to increase annual giving and continue to raise the endowment. But, to be fair, a review of annual giving and endowment growth as indicated by a number of sources (see the Center for Measuring University Performance for a good overview of these issues) indicates that many majority institutions have done similar jobs over the years. But, good for Howard!
