Granting universities use of subscription based satellite radio frequencies to provide educational programming deserves serious scrutiny unless the HEIs are planning to subsidize the service and the equipment required to receive the programming from this special broadcast sector. While reconciling this issue, consideration might be given to whether education institutions will be able to assemble programs to attract listeners, let alone sponsors. Then there are the issues of whether this is just another money making scheme, another manifestation of the elitism that well endowed universities perpetuate to maintain their dominance in the higher education marketplace. Oh, yes. How does restricting access to educational materials like this fit in with the popular open access philosophy sputtering about campuses across the country these days? Such this is a branding strategy but branding does not sell radio programs nor will it help undergraduates or listeners get a job, which is what getting an education primarily is all about. Isn't it?

With iTunes U already up and running, the idea is DOA.
