Some random advice:

1) You are obviously plenty bright for graduate work.

2) Don't get a degree with "studies" in its name. And could you possibly do your work from a less crowded field than English? Even history is a better job market, but sociology and political science (or international relations) are better still. Though not good...

3) Yes, get the MA, Ace the hell out of everything, present and publish, get your MA professors to write letters about how you walk on water.

4) Ace the GRE to partially compensate for your GPA.

5) Work on your languages.
