I don't think you really need us. Sounds like your decision is already made.

Correct. I was just hoping that someone would advance a sage argument to prevent my financial demise.

By chance, I'm listening to the Nina Simone cover of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne". It occurs to me that  it was written in Montreal.

Is this their final offer?  ie. did you mention this to them and try to get them to come closer to matching your current salary?  Or are negotiations over?

Will you be able to justify it with any cost of living savings from living there? eg. if you live near public transport you could get rid of a car if you have one now.

I have to admit I would find it difficult to turn down an opportunity to live there myself.

Happiness.  (Assuming it is just you, no SO or kids to consider).

maybe! When I lived there last I would see him sometimes, as he lived across the street at the time.
Where I live now there are only yuppies with expensive baby strollers on the streets, no internationally known poets.

You mean God? or Leonard Cohen?

P.S. I vote happiness.

Whither Canada?

Judging by how fast tickets are going for his current concert tour, Leonard Cohen might be God.

I vote happiness as well, Canadian-style.

Life is too short to be unhappy, imo.

If the money is enough to live on without needing a second job, then I'd go to Montreal.  If you'd be trying to raise a family there on $35,000 a year, well, then that's a different story.

One thing I don't get: Is the non-Montreal school a better one?  I would think that a comparable school in a large city would pay more, rather than much less.

Montreal is well worth 15K a year, every year, for the rest of your life.  Easy call - I wish I was in the same boat.  Do it for everyone who wishes they could, and then do it for yourself.

I would have to agree with the last poster, that dramatically improved quality of life may be worth 15K/year--particularly if you don't have a family that is going to be dramatically influenced by the change in financial circumstances.  Montreal is a very inexpensive place to live.  People who are not familiar with the province might be very surprised by the relatively low cost of living, particularly when compared to large American cities.  Also, have you considered how expenses like health care and taxes might factor into this?  You may pay less in terms of monthly health care costs but more in  taxes. Also, you'd be eligible for things like SSHRC and NSRC and a successful grant from either of those organizations could more than make up for any salary difference.  See other threads on this subject for some idea of the money allocated under these programs.

In any case, I would seriously consider the job in Montreal, though there are universities in the province that are currently under some serious budget constraints and this can impact their ability to hang on to junior faculty.  In my discipline, the Quebec schools have become well known for have a revolving door for their junior faculty precisely because of low salaries.

I'm glad to see so many who would vote for happiness!

@killerapp- I'd be moving from another Canadian city, so the health care costs are a non-issue.  The Canada Health Act mandates universal coverage country-wide, so the low pay comes with almost free (there's usually a monthly provincial fee, something like $35) access to health care.  That said, personal income tax rates in Quebec are the highest in Canada: something like 38%.

I do agree on the revolving door reputation of some Quebecois schools.
