I’m an assist. prof. in a foreign language field and would like to work in the UAE. I’ve read all the “Academics in the Middle East” and “Working Overseas” threads but I cannot find the answer to my question.

According to my online search, the UAE universities only have departments of English and Arabic. Would it make sense to approach the UAE (the local?, the American?) universities and propose to them that I organize a program in the language and literature that is my specialty?

Has anyone done anything similar, and if so, do you have any advise?

Thanks in advance—any ideas / suggestions greatly appreciated.

Learn how to distinguish between 'advise' which is a verb, and 'advice' which is the noun.

You are welcome!

Hi, I am not sure about the foreign language courses or departments however there are a lot of American universities in the Middle East, eg. Qatar, and the UAE (Dubai, and Abu Dhabi) just to start.  I would try doing a google search of universities in each of the places and then look at the websites.  I found postings for jobs on the school's websites that I had not seen anywhere else.

By the way which language?

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I did look at the websites of various universities in UAE; however, they only have departments of English and Arabic.

Congratulations on the job offer (I see you are going to Abu Dhabi), and all the best!
