I'm in the last round -- I was lucky enough to get recruited for a job -- after a few days of interviewing I've been recommended to the dean for a chair of a smallish basic science dept in a medical school.  I know to talk about salary, moving expenses, potential hires, and space -- I've been out of the negotiating loop for 12 years though -- what else should I be sure to ask about?

Thanks all!!!

Budget for department, faculty development money, your own development money and dean's publishing expectations for you, merit and other bonuses, grant writing (and obtaining) expectations, relocation expenses over and above moving (e.g., trip to area to find a place to live--mileage and lodging and meal expenses, security deposits, etc. depending on location), tenure and rank, summer obligations....you know, the usual.

PM me if you want specific advice and good luck!

Do you hail from Planet Hello Kitty?

It's like an action movie, but boring.

Ask about how evaluations are done for the chair and about the hours you're expected to keep.

Increased and/or better (windows) lab space for dept.
New tt lines w/ startup cash.
Large ticket items (e.g., new confocal microscope).

Sorry I didn't see this before.

In addition to the good advice above:

1.  Clarify what the expected tenure requirements will be for faculty you recruit.  What does the competition look like within the med school when they go up with their peers for review?  Are basic science expected to have X million in grants?  PNAS, Nature, Science pubs?  And then think hard about what startup resources you will need to get your faculty off the ground.  This depends of course, on how many faculty you expect to recruit and what their areas are expected to be.  That is, design your startup packages now and expect the Dean to pay for them.  Is this 2M, 3M, 5M?  Don't flinch.

2.  Will the Dean supply a certain percentage of core salary support for your basic science people (say, 30%)?  Is this done in other med school depts.  As quickly as you can, try to find out what deals the other depts. got from the Dean.

3.  What is the Dean's tax on grants (federal, non-profit, commercial)?  Ask for a better deal for the next five years.  Better yet, ask to have it waived for 3 years.

4.  Are there any PhD programs within the med school?  Can your dept get guaranteed stipend support for X students over the next 10 years?, etc.

5.  Ask for a fund-raising effort for an endowed chair in your Dept.  Why not?

6.  Ask for subsidies for use of core facilities for the next 5 years (Tissue Bank, Biostatistics, Microarray, Bioinformatics).

7.  Complete subsidy of your living expenses until you move into your house or final residence (i.e. apt expenses for months.)

8.  Help selling your house:  School will cover the difference if house will not get market value.

9.  $$$ for new dept. core facilities.

10.  Is there adequate grant management support?  If not, that needs to come from Dean until your depts efforts can support it.

Good luck!
