An American in Paris.... (Finding Roots)

Hi all
I have a chance to go to Paris next summer for a conference. The conference part is pretty well set (the conference organizers do a good job of the heavy lifting!). A family member was doing some genealogy (interthreadulity!), and stumbled across a possible lost French branch. I would like to spend a few days poking about to see if I can find anything.
Those of you who are familiar with such things: the top two or three places in Paris to explore (time period pre-Napoleon to Napoleon's death and in Paris proper), any off-the-beaten path web sites, anything that the average family-tree-searcher wouldn't think of. I'm not a historian (don't even pretend to know anything about it!), so am bit of a hack when it comes to exploring these things. All help/constructive ideas appreciated.
I will only have a few days (I know I won't get in any depth in that time) and my ability to travel about it quite limited. PMs are fine and appreciated if you don't want to give away your location.
Thanks so much.

Have you been to Paris lots of times before? I love so many of the most classic touristic Parisian sites that I would recommend at least a mix of classic and off-beat. Unless you've "already been there, done that" with all the major sites.

Hi CG:
Never been. I will be trying to hit the big places, but am also looking for some places to try my hand at a little historical research.
thanks.
