I have used the search feature for this forum and have not found anything helpful. If I have missed something, please provide a link.

My husband and I will be going to New York for a week or two so I can do some research in Manhattan. We are not interested in sleeping on bunk beds in a hostel. We want a private room, preferably with a private bath, but we don't want to pay typical NY hotel prices. Any ideas? We can plan the trip around the best rates.

I second abd_chem's suggestion to check craigslist short term housing.

Also, the Greenpoint YMCA has private rooms with private bathrooms for about $100 per night.  It's in Brooklyn, on the G train (which goes from Brooklyn to Queens, so you have to transfer to get to Manhattan), about a 25 minute commute from midtown.

The rates for the Chelsea really aren't too bad, and it's got a good location. Rates are around !09-120/night dbl, which for NY is a steal.

As far as I know, the cheapest Manhattan hotels are in Koreatown--low to mid 30s around 6th avenue. You can stay in La Quinta Inn, for instance, for $109 a night. There are a bunch of similar hotels in the area.

Thanks, the_scene. I checked the La Quinta and other hotels in Koreatown, but I did not find anything near $109 a night. However, I will keep checking. I know that some of those bargain prices come and go.

Thanks again to everyone for the help. I had checked the Internet before posting, but I knew that forumites would have inside information.

You could stay across the river in New Jersey and take the train or whatever into the city.

I stayed at the

Newton Hotel
2528 Broadway
New York, NY 10025
+1 212-678-6500

It has private rooms, some with shared bath, some with private baths.   It was very reasonable by New York standards and I would stay there again.  The rooms were small but very clean and well equipped.

Don't be afraid to look in Queens as well.  There are nice places in Astoria which may be "affordable".

Avoid the Carter off Times Square. Yeah, $99 a night, but it is a rathole.
