It took me longer than it should have to figure out what a 'standing O' was meant to mean. I automatically thought of a rather different O. Standing? Huh?
Would you like me to send instructions to 98?

I wonder if this is yet another example of an across-the-pond translation issue. A friend of mine once asked for a "ride" in England when she should have asked for a "lift." Needless to say, her host was quite perplexed.

Hmmm... sort of like the English exchange student in my American HS class who asked, in the middle of an exam, if she could borrow a "rubber" from anyone. Even the teacher couldn't keep a straight face. The student did, eventually, get an "eraser" from someone.

Sorry, froggy. Standing ovation. But as for any other O's, well...I think that discussion will have to go to a different thread. ;-)

Or the poor kid from England who, in 4th grade, was told by the teacher to put all his work "in the bin." He looked at her funny, asked again, and followed the directions. The next day she asked him why he hadn't completed any of his work and he started crying and said he had put it in the bin and pointed at the trash can.

What did the teacher want him to do?

What did the teacher want him to do? Put the materials in a small box, probably sitting on the teacher's desk.

Yes, sorry. There was, like a file box/letter box marked "class work," which she referred to as a "bin"

<unrelated>
Oh, Oh. Now I remember you. I thought I didn't like your tone, and now I remember why. You flit around on this here thread and that here thread proclaiming things that are mostly nonsense and getting into silly arguments with people and misrepresenting what others say. Finally, and most damming, you have no sense of humor or irony. And your monicker is stupid (and also a lie).
May you be bullied out of the fora before you reach a respectable number of posts.

No, you don't need first hand experience to have an opinion. But common sense says that you gracefully defer to those who do have actual experience.
It's not an academic thing. Doesn't matter how many baseball games you have watched on the TV box, you really can't go face to face with the manager. If you could, you would be the manager. But, "ahem", you are not.
One of the hardest things in life is to know what you don't know. Particularly when the list is so, so long.

You know, after all the abuse Kay has taken on that thread, being told to "shut up" and "go away" by some people, he has never stooped to that behavior himself. His posts have strictly addressed the topic of the thread. You may not agree with his take on the subject, but he has stayed on topic and not directly attacked posters (unless there were things that have been deleted that I did not see). I virtually never agree with Kay's opinions, but I give him props for staying on the thread topic.
If you want to tell people to shut up, that's what this thread is for.
Speaking of which: Shut up. And you -- are you freaking kidding?

Absolutely. Kay shows considerable restraint, and always has, which is admirable, especially given the personal attacks he's been subject to over the years here.
