Finally. I understand one of these posts.

My first reaction was "will you just grow a pair?"  but MTG's answer is much nicer.

"Grow a pair" would be appropriate in this case. So would "See one of the 16,000 previous threads we've already had about that issue."

"Grow a pair" is exactly what I was thinking.  That's why I posted here instead of on the thread.  When I opened the reply window there the temptation to write just that was overwhelming, so I withdrew.

1. Wow, the whole pot/kettle thing there just went right over your head, didn't it?

2. You're right. There are so many other, more compelling reasons. I could list them but not even I am that cruel.

I'm going to pretend that you didn't write that because everyone deserves a free pass for being a blowhard moron once in a while.  But, please, now go back to being your normal self so I can read your posts without rolling my eyes and sighing.

Yeah, but I could see what you would have written had you been here and I'm chalking that up on your record anyway.

I don't want to revive the thread, but I have to post these somewhere.

For men: A bulging belly is the new black
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/13/fashion/13POTBELLY.html?_r=1

I am so tempted to send this one to my mother and sister. No possible good could result from my doing so, so I won't. Still, I must say it is nice to see the body I've had (and that they've criticized) for years being hailed in the Paper of Record as the latest hip thing.

Now, I agree it is unfortunate that women's bellies do not get the respect and honor they deserve. And the truth is, neither do men's bodies, this article notwithstanding. Perhaps in the future we'll learn to hate ourselves (and each other) less.

It's worth pointing out, I think, that they could have written the exact same article about the bellies of people, generally, without making it gender specific. Among other things, doing so would have prevented the author from writing idiocies such as this one:

Quote
Leading with a belly is a male privilege of long standing, of course, a symbol of prosperity in most cultures and of freedom from anxieties about body image that have plagued women since Eve.

Yeah, because we all know the female obsession with eliminating body fat is as fundamental to womanhood as menstruation. <rolls eyes>

I don't expect everyone to be an historian. Really, I don't. But you don't have to be an historian to notice that until quite recently, nearly all female portraiture in the western canon (not to mention other traditions) positively reveled in women's roundness.

TRB: In fashion or not, I'm sorry that you have to endure such comments from family members. That's absolutely awful of them.

Why is it that you always have to express the opinion that runs contrary to common sense? If I started a thread that said "the sky is blue," you'd probably find a way to argue that "the sky is red."

Dude, your problem seems to be not the number of your years, but your lack of having managed to obtain any wisdom on your way to attaining them.

My situation is a whole lot worse than yours, but I wouldn't trade it for your general unhappiness with life for anything at all.  Good luck to you.
