What is it like to be a Dean at a Department of Defense's university, school or college?

I can only hope you mean the National Defense University.  It's best to ascertain the name of a place before applying.

Otherwise, I would imagine it's much like being a department chair at the Department of the Treasury College.

The armed forces/DoD have a variety of schools, some of which have provosts and deans - for example the Defense Language Institute, which is accredited and awards AA degrees.

The number of people who could answer the question of what it would be like to be a dean there is probably fairly small.

True, but isn't Mickfed fairly high up at one of those sorts of institutions?

I've been a dean level administrators in both academe and at DoD institutions.  No real difference other than senior executive management and the board of trsutees are flag officers in the military rather than bankers and corporate executives.  Take the uniforms off and you couldn't tell the difference.

In DoD institutions your students are driven (highly motivated doesn't even begin to describe the level of competition among them) and many have real world experiences that can really add to discussions.

Teaching staff will include permanent uniformed military faculty, tenured civilian faculty, and uniformed faculuty on two to three year assignments.

Service academies are BA/Bs granting institutions.  Other universities are MS and post-graduate professional certification programs.  Technical schools teach languages and occupational skills - some award AA and AAS degrees.
