Was anyone else amazed at "Hoffman's" article about interviewing 18 job candidates?

My thought was - totally valuable advice. I teach at what sounds like a similar institution, and his advice about new hires and non-elite students was right own.

What I was stunned about was his faith that senior faculty at elite research institutions would be able to tell their grad students about this. The professors I worked with at my own elite grad institution don't know diddly about a 3-3 or higher load, teaching mostly first generation college students with poor academic skills and/or 40 hour a week jobs, and a campus environment that values teaching and service over scholarship. I feel like I'm in a completely different environment than the one for which I was trained.

Thoughts?

Wow, I bet it is interesting but since I don't have a paid subscription, I can't get to anything beyond the first sentence.  That sort of limits discussion on CHE content I find.

Maybe the mods can "unlock" the article for us to discuss?

Nope.

Anyway, the mods will post a link to the article in the morning so we can all read and discuss!

All of the places I've studied or worked had institutional subscriptions that would allow online access in-network.

Then you are very, very lucky.

Many do, many have cut back on these subscriptions and many, like my fine institution only provide access from an on-campus terminal. Since its mid-May, I'm not going on campus to view an article unless I hear a rumor that its from the MacArthur Foundation and I've been awarded money.  But, that's just me. You, on the other hand, might be willing to drive the 20 miles for intellectual curiosity about this man's term on an SC, me? I'm  a lazy between-sessions slob!

You're not missing much.  The posts in the fora are more enlightening.

I have to go to the Dean's Office to read the free paper copy of the Chronicle.  Sad thing is, I do.  And when no one is looking, I take it.

Check to see if your university has VPN accounts, or the equivalent.  These allow network access from home.

Am I allowed to copy and past the article text here ? I would be glad to as long as it doesn't violate a CHE forum rule.

I didn't post the link, because the link in my browser shows my "eproxy" code from my university. It wouldn't work for others.

You can get the article from the home page on the right hand side. Click on "Off the List" and then click on the link at the end of the synopsis for the entire article.

I didn't know if it was ok to cut and past the whole article here either - moderator????

Nope, no more VPN and no more dial-up to the U system.  This seems to be based on some science database package they bought that ONLY can be accessed through the hardwired on-campus connections at the moment.  Hope someone wins a Nobel out of here to justify the incredible dislocation of everything.
