JohnR, are you suggesting that female swimmers go topless?

In a triathlon last fall, I was passed on the bike by (just about everyone including) a guy wearing a flesh colored and clearly almost worn out tri suit. At first I thought he was naked. So not pretty. Ugh.
Hey, money was a little tight. I'm getting a new tri-suit this year. Black?

I have a hard time finding bathing suits that fit well (pear shaped, so two different sizes on top and bottom and last time I checked, speedo doesn't do tankini style suits in pieces you can buy separately). I have definitely flashed people in the pool because of a top that was too loose.
So doing triathlons was my favorite swimming development. I open water swim a lot more than I used to and when I do that I just wear my triathlon shorts (er, and a tri top). Butt/thigh issue solved!
Of course some might argue that covering up one's thighs with spandex is not much of an advancement over no coverage at all...

I need to find a place to practice more open water swimming. I'm doing a 5K swim this summer. I have similar fit issues with my wet suit. Oh the horror! I'm looking for more wetsuitless triathlons on the future. I think covering the thighs with spandex is a great advancement. I cannot even imagine running in a swimsuit. My thighs would scare people off. I'm always amazed at triathletes (always very lean, of course) who do the whole triathlon in a swim suit. I. Would. Never.

If I ran without some kind of tight shorts, my thighs would rub each other completely off. In the pool it's not such a big deal.
There's one guy at my pool who wears flesh-ish trunks. They are not lined. I am not amused. And yesterday there was a young guy wearing swim, er, pants? They were waist-to-ankle and looked very cool. He, however, looked very cold.

Ditto on the never running in a swimsuit thing. The long trunks are interesting. If you have noticed any Olympic swimming or other major swimming meets in recent years, swimmers wear more rather than less because the fabric technology is such that the fabric is slicker or faster than bare skin. This is, in fact, quite controversial as more records have been set using the skin suits than other suits, so many fear that swimming has become more about the technology and less about the skill or somesuch.

I am picking up this hilarious discussion rather late. Johnr: transvestite swimming gear! Fabulous. And can I just say, I feel like I know so much more about you just realizing how much you've thought about this problem. I approve of the long spandex trunks for men. And scampster: I have started ordering all my suits from swimoutlet.com. I LOVE Tyr brand suits (especially the fit on the lower half), although I have a rather different problem that I've finally solved by wearing a tank top under the full body suit. The top tank is made by Speedo, and although I usually find Speedo design pretty shoddy or annoying, this item is very sturdy. And it's only $10!

On the positive side, did the shock make you cycle faster?

On the positive side, did the shock make you cycle faster? No, slower since he was passing me and I wanted him out of my view as soon as possible. I'm a relatively slow cyclist and a relatively fast swimmer, so I spend most of my time on the bike watching the butts go by.

But Tyr is expensive, and I'm going through 2-3 suits a year, so I was thinking of actually trying Lands End's lap suits. Anyone here tried those? They run about $30 cheaper than Tyr, but I don't know how well they'll hold up.

Bibliothecula, have you tried the local shop where your local recreational and high school swim teams get their suits? Where I grew up there was a shop two towns over that all the teams ordered through, and any surplus / wrong size / wrong pattern / otherwise extra suits went onto a sale rack. I still go back there to get my suits, as I can get a Speedo, TYR, or other good quality suit for under $50 (and often as low as $20-$30 if I'm not fussy about color or pattern).

Well, I'm pretty no-frills, and I love the fit of the plain maxback suits, they're about $40 right now, sometimes they drop down to more like $35: http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/1008.htmI buy two at a time to avoid shipping costs.
