Really? No one has mentioned Green Day yet? I don't swim with music, although I cannot get on one of those gym machines for more than 5 minutes without something in my ears.
I actually bought _American Idiot_ specifically for working out at the gym, and then I completely fell in love with the whole album.

In fact, it's a rare triathlon that is won by the fastest swimmer, really! Watch any of the IronMan triathlons or the ITU (or whatever it's called now) triathlons. The super fast swimmers rarely win.
Don't get me started.... Sorry johnr! I'm a pretty slow cyclist and a very slow, as in record slow, runner. I really wish the swim was last and/or much longer in comparison to the bike and run! That's what I'm talking about too! The swims seem to get shorter and shorter to attract the masses and us swimmers get the shaft! Might as well line us up on our bikes at the beginning of the race, spray us all down with a garden hose and just be done with the charade. A couple of years ago a triathlon near my brother's house had a 200 yard swim (!) a 20 mile bike and and 5 mile run. That's just insulting! This would be the scampster preferred triathlon :-) Where is that one at? :-) Is that a johnr theory about why the swims are short (to attract the masses) or do others chatter about that too? I've never heard that put forth before! But the swim is indeed the limiter - it is somewhat stunning to me the number of adults who can't comfortably swim 300 m in open water - gees, that should be a survival skill if anything! But it's true - my inability to swim fast is irrelevant with a 300 to 500 m sprint. Essentially it just spreads us out on the bike course. At least Olympic distance races are more balanced.

But it's true - my inability to swim fast is irrelevant with a 300 to 500 m sprint. Essentially it just spreads us out on the bike course. At least Olympic distance races are more balanced. We have a local tri that is 800m swim (in river with cross currents), 20 mile bike, and 4.6 mile run. Who wants to run 4.6 miles? HMPH! Of course, we have another one that is 3 mile run, 6 mile bike, and 400m swim (reverse order, finish in a pool) and the cycling is just enough to be annoying and not enough to be good for any cyclists. It's mean to be a "first tri" though. On the swimming front, I swam 3,000 yards this morning. First time I've done that much in a while. It was gooooooood! scampster, we watched an IronMan on TV the other day (don't remember which one, Idaho or NY) and there was this gal who could barely swim but she kicked butt on the bike and nearly won the dang thing. In the interview, she said something like,"I started triathlons on a dare because a friend knew I couldn't swim. However, if I want to win at Kona, I'm gonig to have to learn to swim." Well, DUH!

Good new first - I found a great new after swim hair conditioner. Avon Olive Oil mask. Wonderful and much less expensive than the salon stuff.
Bad news - Something is wrong with my Aquabeat! How can this be? I've only had it for a few months and it wasn't cheap! Must fix or listen to self think for 1.2 miles (gag).

Scary. My mind goes all over the place when swimming! Frightening at times.

I may have healed my Aquabeat.
Let's hope, otherwise it's back to the rambling thoughts.

I really want a music player for the pool, but at the same time I have a terrible time keeping track of my laps unless I'm constantly repeating to myself, "one.....one.... one....two....two...two...." Maybe I need a music player AND a counter device? Of course, I only ever do 36 laps at most....

Wear a digital watch and start the stopwatch on it. Hit the lap button every time you come to the end of the pool where you started. Then, the number of laps x the length of the laps is how far you swam. It helps to have a watch with enough lap memory for whatever your swimming length is. Timex IronMan watches come in 30 to 100-lap memory options and they aren't too expensive.

It'll give you room to stretch your goals. :o) Also, if you at all have trouble reading without your glasses, get the male version not the tiny female version. I have the men's watch because it has HUGE numbers on it, which I appreciate when I'm in the pool.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced device that keeps track of my heartrate? It would be cool if I could use it while swimming, but one just for dry land would be cool.

I have a heart rate monitor (Sigma I think) that I used to use on the bike. I just don't like wearing the strap. I've never used one in the pool (and I've never seen anyone using one in the pool, in person).
I use either perceived effort or I count my heartrate with the paceclock at the end of a set.
I'm out of town this week, so I might be swimless. Ack!
