See?  You should have slept-in and had a chocolate croissant for breakfast.

Today, I swam again and it wasn't quite as pathetic.  I did, however, have a ham croissant afterwards. :o)

I swam and had Golden Grahams. About once a year I need a fix of them, and this was the week. Hooray for sugar!

In other notes, I am off soda except for on weekends. <whine> It is hard. </whine>

I actually didn't have soda for about six weeks back in 2002.

It took all of one day for me to start drinking it again.

My sweet tooth apparently never gets sensitive...

Whoop! 2.5 sets today*.  I will keep it up.  Shouldn't be too hard, since it's getting warm out, which makes getting into the pool a pleasure.

I essentially haven't exercised since August 2007 and have been sedentary since August 2008, so I'm really happy to have started again.  Kind of wondering which muscles will be aching tomorrow, but looking forward to swimming again even if it's just another 2.5 tomorrow.

My sore eyes and frazzled hair reminded me to add conditioner and goggles to the bag for tomorrow...

*1 set = 2 x 25m front crawl, 2 x breast stroke, 2 x backstroke, 2 x sidestroke left, 2 x sidestroke right, 2 x hands-free lifesaving backstroke.

I haven't had the sweet stuff in years, and I can't have caffeine either. I was weird though, that when I bought a Diet Ride (my drink of choice, no caffeine, no nutrasweet, no sugar), I couldn't drink it. I was surprised about that.

My routine these days is two to three sets of this, depending on how much time I have:

100 kick free
100 pull free
100 each free, back, free, breast, IM

100 breast cooldown when I'm all done.

Anybody else using pool buoys?  It's weird...when I'm just pulling, I've discovered that I move much more smoothly, have more power and actually go faster than when I'm using my legs.  I can cover the length of the pool in 18 strokes when I'm pulling, but 21 when I'm swimming.  WTF???

You are doing great, averagebear!

I almost never use pull bouys as I have a lower back injury (and, let's face it, I float really high anyway) and have had two shoulder surgeries, so I don't need more stress on the upper body.

If you are going faster with the pull bouys, it's probably because it's correcting your body position.  If you happen to be very lean, you are probably dragging your legs too low or lifting your head and shoulders too high when not using the pull bouys.  I suspect it's either provided much needed bouyancy or correcting some other problem in your body position or stroke.

Octoprof, do you use a wetsuit for your tris? I haven't made the investment, but considering swimming is my weakest event, I am wondering if it might help replicate the pull buoy effect... For sprints it doesn't seem necessary, but for Olympic distance + it seems like it could help...

I don't like using my wetsuit because I feel like I'm floating so high I'm in the Dead Sea (yes, I've swum there, too much floating!). However, for you it might correct your low dragging legs just as the pull bouy does.

I don't know if you are male or female, but the dragging legs problem is particularly common in males.

I do use a wetsuit this year. I never did before. It was supplied for me as part of Team-in-Training. I've used it in two short tris and will use it for the big one Monday (assuming the water is still cold there...). I won't use it in the summer, of course. I don't like the feel of it even though it does make me a bit faster. My body position in swimming is very high so the wetsuit just makes me feel weird and it inhibits my shoulders (it is sleeveless and I still feel inhibited movement).

However, swimming in a tri is very different from other types of swimming. I almost never kick in my distance freestyle workouts and in the triathlon I only kick to get away from a crowd in the combat swimming mode.  I used my legs very little in the swim to save them for the bike and run and to save the energy (kicking takes lots of energy) for later when I need it much more.  Goal for the swim is to swim smoothly and consistently and not be tired at the end of it.

Just a quick check-in.

I totally changed my workout. I am now swimming for a solid hour, no kick board, no nothin' but swimming. Since it's a new routine, I definitely feel it. I must get protein after this swim or else I'm a loon for the rest of the day.

That's great. Soda is not worth the calories in my opinion. I'd rather have a hunk of stinky cheese.
