It is quite tight, of course, as no one seems to make (affordable) wetsuits for fat hobbits.

I just had to say that this describes my problem with shopping in general. Fat hobbits unite for better clothes/swimsuits/exercise gear!

I thought that wetsuits felt like that on everyone at first - tight, yucky and uncomfortable.

My pool is currently closed for cleaning and I can't wait until it reopens on Tuesday.  Anthroid, enjoy yourself - my back felt so good from just paddling around in the pool.  I did realise that I need new goggles and earplugs, too.

The haven't-been-swimming-recently thing must be going around.  I haven't been in forever either.  The usual annoying-but-non-threatening health problem has been joined by another one . . . I'm not in imminent danger of death (though I should probably see a doc about most recent problem but I'm hoping it will go away), but let's just say the conditions are such that I'd be in danger of being the jerk who gets the pool closed for everyone for an hour because they should have just stayed out of a public pool when . . . . yeah.

My clothes still fit and everything, but I'm not happy with how I look right now, and on-again off-again SO's coming to visit . . . perhaps his eyesight has declined?  Or he'll just have missed me a lot regardless?

So, have you heard about Phelp's new freestyle technique?  http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/more/04/22/michael.phelps.ap/index.html

Any guesses? It is freestyle after all, he could do almost anything except for underwater swimming!  Will it be a radical departure or just a tweak that wouldn't be noticed by most folks?  My guess is that he'll explode out of the water after the start with a few butterfly stokes that will morph into a crawl stroke with butterfly dolphin kicking.

He will have missed you a lot regardless.  (If he hasn't, maybe he's not on-again material!)

I hope you recover soon.  Remember, the pool will still be there when you feel better, and it will welcome you back with open arms.

How very coy!  C'mon Michael, tell us your big shocking secret move!  Maybe he'll do one freestyle stroke, followed by one backstroke arm and just roll over and over like a giant human screw.

Update about my voyeur buddy:  so I went a bit earlier to the pool today and talked to one of the front desk attendants, and I barely had 4 words out of my mouth and she knew exactly whom I was talking about.  So, as somebody else guessed earlier, I think this guy is a known entity at the "Y".  Within 30 seconds she had pulled up his very bizarre photo and said, "Is this him?"  "Yup."  My "Y" is one of the traditional ones with a men's residence attached, so I suppose he may be one of the residents.  From what the attendant was saying, it's possible that he's just an odd sort of character, or maybe has some developmental issues -- but in any case, she said she'll have one of the managers keep an eye out for him tonight.

Thanks again, everybody, for your suggestions and sympathy.

I suppose this belongs on the inhaling thread, but it's specifically about swimming.  I was finally able to go today, though only half a mile, the health issue stayed at bay, and I should be good to go again tomorrow, with a colleague (and her six-year-old, so I don't know how much "swimming" there will be, unless this kid is the second coming of CQ, in which case she'll just hop in and share a lap lane with me).

I'm guessing he's changed the shape of his pull and the turnover rate. He previously had a fairly slow turnover rate.

Hooray!  Nothing wrong with "just" half a mile, either.

This is wonderful!

I was able to do 22 laps in about 25 minutes last Friday and 25 laps today in 28 minutes...I've lost 6 pounds in the last 7 days.  I'm pretty pleased with myself...

I am getting back in the pool this week after a few months (eek!) away. I usually do 35 minutes of laps and try to increase the number of laps every day.

Y'all crack me up. I haven't swum since the triathlon on Saturday but I'm going to get up and swim in the morning, if possible. :o)

Hey Octo!  You are a sneaky multi-limbed, multi-talented creature!  Congrats on finishing your great athletic trial -- I had no idea it was coming up so soon.  How did it go?

Yay 3 days in a row!  It was a good swim, despite my having my backup goggles stolen and then returned by some monstrous children* who were playing basketball in the lap lane until I got in and then promptly returned them (to a different lane) after they saw/heard me ask the lifeguard if they'd been mistakenly turned in, and who are the IDIOT ADULTS in charge of these children who don't teach them that THE PART OF THE POOL THAT IT'S OKAY TO PLAY IN WHEN IT'S NOT ROPED OFF INTO LANES IS NOT OKAY TO PLAY IN WHEN IT'S ROPED OFF INTO LANES??!?!?!?!  GO PLAY IN THE SMALLER POOL WHEN PEOPLE WANT TO SWIM LAPS!!!!! [catches breath].  Anyway, I got in 40 lengths, which is a shade over half a mile.  I could have gone a little longer, because the pool was open for about 20 more minutes, but I decided not to push the issue with my lower back.

Also, I assume everyone else's public pools have also switched over from chlorine to the newfangled mineral salts?  I like the mineral salts better on skin and hair, but they're much worse to swallow and--as I learned tonight after a serious technique botch on a flip-turn--much worse to inhale.  My nose is still stinging (just a tad).

*Of course I can't prove this, but I did my first 200 yards and then stopped to stretch and fiddle with equipment.  No backup goggles.  I hopped out, conferred with the lifeguard, shrugged it off (because they are just goggles) and got back in.  100 yards later, I took another look.  Returned.  To a different lane.  Where they had definitely not been minutes before.  Monstrous children not meeting my eyes.  Mm-hmm.
