I'm a political scientist who will be commenting on a bunch of historians' papers at an interdisciplinary conference that's coming up soon. Does anyone have advice for minimizing the disciplinary "culture clash," in terms of both running the panel and commenting on the papers?

Tell them who you are at the outset.
Just stick to commenting on the papers from your own perspective and focus on the positive.

I was recently at an interdisciplinary conference and had someone from another discipline as my discussant.  I appreciated the different view--I think we often get too stuck in our own ways of thinking.  This discussant was very constructive with his remarks.  I probably would have been much less satisfied with someone from another discipline as my discussant if he had been more on the critical side than the constructive side.

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.
