I already have a BS Degree in Economics, and I am currently working as a Jr. Accountant in our company and would like to further my career in the field of accounting.  My question is - Will getting a certificate in Accounting in UC Berkeley Extension make me more hirable?  And will taking that Accounting certificate program entitle me to sit in a CPA board exam in California?

To sit for the CPA exam in California, you need to have:

24 semester hours of ACCOUNTING coursework (including financial, managerial, tax, audit, etc.)
AND
24 hours of additional accounting OR other business coursework (econ, marketing, whatever)

It matters not where you took the classes, as long as it's from an accredited college (which UC Berkeley extension is).

And yes, getting a certificate there should increase your marketability, as will having the credits to sit for the CPA exam.

Good luck!

It absolutely will help you and increase your marketability.  I have several friends that have benefited.

The UC Berkeley Extension is a well respected school.

Well, it's an extension course, so you really don't know what you're going to get. I taught once in UC Berkeley Extension when in grad school, filling in for a prof, so the standards are loose. But accounting is pretty cut and dried and shouldn't be a problem.
