My attention was drawn to the incident by a British colleague who remembered it. I had been discussing Azzam Pasha's statement with him and remarked that it seemed out of character. He then gave me the Mayhew story which I found verified by Wikipedia. There are two references, one to the Manchester Guardian and one to Hansard (the British Parliamentary record). I don't have the resources to access either but I have asked my British friend to see what he can do.
It is an interesting little sidelight to the history of the time but really not crucial to understanding the origins of the '67 war. Bellicosity hasn't been a cassus belli for hundreds of years though some would like us to believe otherwise.
We have it from Peled, Shamir, Dayan, Begin etc that they were well aware that Nasser didn't want war.

I was reading online about members of the Israeli Knesset who are drawing the line on this 60 year struggle.  They are contacting many governments, nonMuslim and Muslim, to see who would be agreeable to take in some Arab Palestinian Muslims.  In a humanitarian effort, they want to move refugees to other countries so the Muslims can start new lives.  But will anyone take them?

A. Hitler did exactly the same humanitarian effort (I don't really know if I have to put these words in quotation marks for you, catarin) for Jews. Nobody wanted to take Jews.

There are so many hadiths that need to be taken out of Islam because they are self-serving and false.

The whole Old Testament is "self-serving". But, I wrote it many times, this is not a problem: despite the fact that Old Testament stands only for the rights of the Chosen People, Jews, and it treats others very badly, it was a religious belief that nobody has the right to prohibit to the Jews. The problem began when Jews took it as a guide to start war against others, forming the Cult of Chosen People. Nothing was wrong with German history and the legend of Sigfrid, until the moment the cult of Sigfrid was propagated and taken as a gide for making a war.

Not the Old Testament, Koran, or the legend of Sigfrid are "false". False are the applications. And, please note that using each of them in a defensive war is a noble patriotic propaganda, but they become the guides to crime when used in an aggressive war. If you ask what is the difference between the two kinds of war, it is determined by two criteria: 1. Who started the war or the occupation of the foreign country and 2. On whose territory the war is going on. Starting the "preventive war" has no justification, it's a BS, although starting preventive attacks in a war is quite permissible.

All this is well known; I write it only because we are being thrown into the state of savagery by the war mongers who are trying hard to abolish the law.

I am willing to buy that Mayhew (who is quite a character) made this offer, and that he denied that the evidence people gave him met his conditions.  (I assume he would say the same about a quote from Wikipedia!)  This is all the Grauniad stories covered.  I am more curious about the comments on the court decision, which are not sourced, and smell apocryphal. - DvF

What are the wars Israel started?  Please don't say Canaanites and Philistines.

It wasn't the Jews' idea that the Torah was adopted by the West.  Yes, the Jews wrote it for Jews, thus the 613 laws in the Torah which apply to Jews only.  What should the Jews have done to prevent the Torah's use and reinterpretation by others?

So you think relocation for the Arab Palestinians and descendents is a lost cause?  Let the Saudis be responsible for this.  To tell you the truth, the world's burgeoning population and consequences were discussed decades ago in my high school civics class.  So is the bottom line overpopulation?

catarin, I don't think that "relocation for the Arab Palestinians and descendents is a lost cause". Israel relocated millions of Arabs, and it is continuing doing this. I only think that Israel will pay for this.
